Volume Too Loud - Is there a fix?

I’ve updated the Sansa Clip firmware to 01.01.18A, but I’m finding that the volume is still too loud, even at the lowest setting–any lower and the player mutes out. I’ve used the EQ-Custom-MinimizeLevel hack, and it has helped to make listening to MP3s tolerable, but the FM radio is still deafening. Is there a proper fix to this? There have been a fair number of firmware updates; has this well-publicized issue been addressed yet?

Besides this issue, I’m very, very happy with my Sansa Clip purchase, but if I can’t get this audio kink worked out, I’ll have to return it for the sake of the health my eardrums. Irony–the player even includes a legalese pamphlet about listening with the volume low to prevent hearing loss!

There’s currently no fix that I know of, but hopefully Sandisk will issue a firmware update to address this.

Lower volume setting is developed and will be released in the next firmware release.

The extended volume range will be available for all playback modes  (MP3,  FM,  etc)

Estimate is 2-3 weeks.

I do not use FM but I also am finding the minimum volume for MP3 is too loud for my quiet office.

(1GB model from Radio Shack)

Thank you for the information, sansafix. I look forward to the firmware update, and I am sure many others are as well.

Will the firmware fix Sansa e200 (version 1) players too?  I sent mine back, and I should be getting my replacement in the mail soon.  In the case that it has the same volume range as the one I sent in (I’m not getting my hopes up…) will the firmware fix version 1 too?  I read somewhere else on here that only the 2nd version players would take the new firmware.

I’m so glad to hear there is a fix coming for this issue.  I spend a lot of time in quiet places and I really don’t like my music very loud.  Yay for Sandisk!

A new firmware to fix this problem is already released and posted on the front page.  The firmware is 1.01.20, please go to the front page and download to fix this problem with volume being too loud.

Clip is still too loud…

Just turn the volume down by pressing the button on the right side of the Clip.

haha quite funny…

i mean clip is too loud at the lowest volume setting…

It sounds like you didn’t install the new firmware. Go to the sticky thread & follow the instructions there.

nope
 i’ve got 01.01.20 firmware

maybe my ears are too good…

Try reinstalling the firmware. Sometimes glitches happen, so reinstalling may help. The volume should be adjustable to an inaudible level, before it’s even muted.

reinstalling didn’t help, also tried installing older firmware and the lowest volume setting was even louder, maybe next firmware will solve my problem…

How strange…  When I turn my clip all the way down, the volume output is zero.  As in, I can’t hear it at all in a quiet room.  It might as well be off.  I can’t imagine still being able to hear it.

Hope you get it fixed!  If not, I’ve seen headphones with built-in volume controls on the cord.  Not the best solution, but it’s something.

Could be that some Clips have a defect that alters the lowest possible volume level. I recall a certain poster that was really irate about it being “deafening” - and this sounds like another instance.

I would return it to the store for a replacement, or if that is not possible, contact SanDisk about it and get them to replace it. It’s definitely NOT normal.

i had the same problem before with my e200 but the only solution was installing rockbox… im still waiting for the rockbox for the clip… i wanna try flac

Don’t hold your breath on a RB port to the Clip

temptester;

Have you verified Settings/Volume is Normal rather than High?
