SanDisk c240 -- dead battery -- laptop won't acknowledge that the device is connected.

Hi. I know this is similar to a lot of the problems people have reported here, but I couldn’t find an answer precisely addressing my situation. Yesterday I got a new USB cable (lost the other one) and went to charge up the player. At that point, it would come on briefly and display the SanDisk splash screen, then give the advisory “Low Battery” and turn off. Now it won’t even do that much. I have tried various permutations of holding down buttons, using the hold toggle switch, etc. to no avail. The whole player only cost like $25 on Amazon so I might ■■■■ it up and get a new player, but I’m thinking there has to be a way around this. New battery? Different computer?

Bad USB cable?

Try pulling the battery and booting up with the USB cable powering it.  If it doesn’t work, its probably a bad cable.
