PROBLEM SOLVED! THANKS TO EVERYONE! Sansa Clip-2g - HELP! LAPTOP SUDDENLY DOESN'T RECOGNIZE IT

Thanks to everyone who offered me solutions!   I got the answer I needed.  Seems the problem was some driver thing.  I had no understanding of it whatsover; but, I followed the directions and my Sansa works again.  I have never been on a forum before - I posted this as a longshot.  I am so pleased with everyone who tried to help me.  THANKS!

Julie

HELP!  My Sansa always worked fine.  But, recently my laptop will not recognize it.  My other computer is fine with it.  And, friends’ laptops are fine with it.  My USB port works fine because I plug other stuff in and it’s fine.  It just won’t recognize my Sansa.  I can’t even see it in windows explorer - it’s like it does not exist.  Any suggestions?  (No need to suggest the obvious - plugged in tight, turned on, battery charged - I’ve tried ALL that!)  I think it is some type of setting on my laptop; but I have no idea what it is.  Thanks.

Julie

Are you trying this with your laptop plugged into AC power? Laptops are designed to cut-back and manage power consumption when using their battery, so it may not be providing enough power to the USB port to make a connection with your Clip.

It also helps to use MSC mode rather than MTP as this requires more horespower from the host device.

And just a suggestion . . . you may want to edit your post and remove your e-mail address. Nobody here is going to respond except on this forum, but spam-bots will pick up on this and your in-box is likely to be deluged with Viagra & other assorted offers.

Maybe, your computer decided to install a new driver for it. To check what it might be, go into the configuration panel (I don’t know exactly how it is called in English since my computer is set in French and I can’t switch). In the left toolbox you select the classic view and on the new screen, you click on system. you click on the material tab and click on device manager. Look for your sansa clip to see if it reconize it. You have to have it connected on your laptop to do that.

Before you do that, start with what tapeworm told you to do since it is more likely to be the problem.

Thank you both for your suggestions (Tapeworm, I had it plugged in - not battery - still didn’t work).  As for the second response, this is definiely the problem - the driver.  I get this message when I did that:

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Click ‘Check for solutions’ to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

Thing is, my computer says it “is already installed”.  It’s telling me the program is fine - yet it still doesn’t work.

Thank you so much - any other suggestions?

What mode do you have your Clip set in (Settings -> USB Mode).  What happens if you change the mode from MTP to MSC, or vice-versa?

THANK YOU!  to everyone who offered suggestions.  My clip once again works.  Seems it needed to uninstall, then refresh the driver.  I don’t understand ANY of that; but, I followed the directions on the forum and it worked!  THANKS AGAIN TO EVERYONE!
