I just got a refurbished Sansa connect. When I tried to load music from WMP 11, it froze at 31 songs and said it needed to recover, so I downloaded the recovery tool. It goes through the motions but quits(fails) when it supposed to receive the software,. All it shows is the recovery needed screen. jr
There may still be old versions of the recovery tool out there which attempt to download the firmware from Zing servers, which no longer exist (or they don’t serve the firmware, anyway).
This is the latest version of the recovery tool offered by SanDisk:
http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/863
Note that this version of the recovery tool will remove the WiFi functions (stream Launchcast stations and view Flickr photos) from your player. If you want to keep/get these functions, you’ll need to get a bit more techie and follow these instructions (note that if your player is still displaying “recovery needed”, you can skip to step #4):
1) Make sure you have the Sansa Connect Recovery Tool installed. If not, install it from
http://mp3support.sandisk.com/tools/DeviceRecoverySetup.exe
2) Follow steps 2 and 3 in this document: http://mp3support.sandisk.com/tools/connect-recovery-instructions.pdf
3) Verify that your Sansa Connect is displaying “Recovery Needed”. If it isn’t, you didn’t follow the previous step correctly.
4) Download the zip file containing the WiFi firmware ( also known as “recovery images” ) from http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UNLDGZ1N
5) Open up the zip file, locate the following files, and extract them to your disk directory “C:\Program Files\SanDisk\Sansa Connect Device Recovery\cmdline”:
- everest_initrd_ext_prod_1.1.1.50239.srr.e
- everest_vmlinux_ext_prod_1.1.1.50239.srr.e
- yeverest_zap_ota_rel_1.1.2.65799.tar.gz.e
- yeverest_zap_ota_rel_ext_prod_1.1.2.65799.sig
6) Connect your Sansa to USB.
7) Open up a command prompt window (Start->Run->cmd)
8) Type in, or copy and paste, the following lines into the command prompt window, one at a time. Note that you can paste into a command prompt window by right clicking in the window and selecting “Paste”.
- c:
- cd “\Program Files\SanDisk\Sansa Connect Device Recovery\cmdline”
- zsi_fw.exe -w everest_vmlinux_ext_prod_1.1.1.50239.srr.e everest_initrd_ext_prod_1.1.1.50239.srr.e
- zaprecover.exe -t 600000 -f yeverest_zap_ota_rel_1.1.2.65799.tar.gz.e yeverest_zap_ota_rel_ext_prod_1.1.2.65799.sig
9) Wait for the recovery to finish; at the end your Connect will reboot. If Windows displays its New Hardware wizard during this process, just cancel the wizard.
If you have any problems with any of the above steps, stop, and post the exact error message you get to this thread.
Hi,
Thanks for your prompt attention to my problem. I have down loaded the zip files from Megaupload, extracted them but my computer says it can’t read (adobe9) them because the are damaged of not decoded properly. So recovery has not occurred, it quits at software down load. The recovery tool has been upgraded from the site you gave me. John
None of the files in the zip file are Adobe documents, so I’m not sure why you’re refering to “adobe9”. What are you trying to do with the extracted files when your computer says it can’t read them? You shouldn’t be attempting to open them, all you should do is make sure they’re in the proper directory.

My computer recognizes a mtp says it can’t open (code10). I have tried to enter the codes you gave me but the computer will not recognize them, saying there is no recognizable file internal nor external. John (non-techie)
The files once extrated are marked as Abobe files

If you want to continue trying the WiFi solution, I’ll need to know exactly which of the steps I listed gave you a problem, and what the exact error message was.
It might be easier for you, though, if you just use the non-WiFi recovery tool:
http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/863
Just follow the steps in the PDF document on the same page.

I’m not sure why files with an “.e” or “.sig” extension would be Adobe files, but in any case, the instructions listed don’t call for opening those files. You should just make sure they’re in the proper directory, as described, then proceed with the rest of the instructions.
Each time I try to download the no-wifi sansa recovery tool the download file freezes then gives a window with first dpinst[21735257] then a dpinst [2147483648] the second window it does twice. help john

Do you mean every time you try to download it, or every time you try to install it?
Which version of Windows are you running?
It quits everytime I try to install it. My system is windows xp,service pack three. john
I’ve seen those errors reported when attempting to install the tool on a Vista 64-bit system.
Is your system XP 64 bits?
It is a 32bit
I’m stumped, then.
You could try Googling for a different version of the recovery tool, though the other ones out there might be old and likely to attempt to download the firmware from the wrong servers, and fail.
Or you could take another shot at the WiFi version … this time, when you encounter an error, you could maybe post a screenshot (or copy the text from the command window) so we can figure out what’s going on.
