Just a quick thanks for your help, although indirect. I came here looking for answers to pass the stupid new EU low volume limit (which is far too quiet) on the recent update, and I found my answer…reset and select North America. It’s now louder than ever, as I’m guessing there was a previous EU limit on it also. Of course, this high volume is too loud for prolonged headphone listening on good quality tracks but my sole reason for the loud volume was for playback on my portable powered speaker (X-MINI 2…AMAZING by the way!). The new update made it completely useless with everything on high! It was absolutely ridiculous as the volume so quiet the quality was poor and the player & my speaker became useless! EU STOP INTERFERING, LET US MAKE DESCISIONS.
Just wanted to say. My PC does not recognise the Clip or charge it when the mode’s been changed to North America. But I’ve reset and changed back to Europe for charging and transferring files and it’s ok. Just incase anyone else has an issue.

Change your USB mode back to MSC, after you select North America, and everything will be fine.
the only way you can ear anything is in a quiet room (at least when using regular headphones, not in-ear)… someone should tell them most people don’t use mp3 players in quiet rooms, but in busy traffic, noisy public transport or loud public places and even with the volume on max you can’t ear ANYTHING in these places, making the device compkletely useless (and I’m not exagerating, if I was getting this new and didn’t know about the non-EU settings, I’d return it to the shop immediately for a refund).
afaik the Euro directive (well, actually I can’t find one … the only one I can find says they’re going to set standards, but not one that actually does) is for the default volume to be to a limit, but the system that the old firmware had to be able to chose to set it high shouldn’t contravene.
Well, this an obvious casualty of rampant legislation. The government wants to shower you with warm fuzzies, and the individual lawmakers want to win your continued support (and their power) by doing things. Pity, there’s an obvious missing link in the form of engineering.
It’s incredibly difficult to set a volume (SPL) limitation as long as you have so many variables in the chain, most namely, wildly variable earphone efficiency.
SanDisk has no choice but compliance with the EU regulations, just as all manufacturers must. Next in line will be laws regulating how loud we can speak in public places, eh? How about specifications for sound deadening in public places. I’d better stop, since legislators aren’t a very creative bunch. I don’t want to give them any ideas.
But there is one very important idea I must impress upon you as an American. You must continue to voice your opinions to those same legislators. Just as the grass must be mowed regularly, so must the lawmaker’s ego. Important safety tip!
Hi, I’ve set my Clip 1gb to ‘MSC’ but in ‘Language’ I still have no option to set the device to ‘America’ or ‘Rest of the World’ and so I can’t increase the volume. Am I missing something here? Failing this what can I delete in the root folder that contains firmware so that maybe I can roll back to an earlier version? Thanks in advance.
Edit:
OK, I’ve managed to fix this now. Just in case you’re as thick as me (unlikely, I know) this is what I did: go to SETTINGS > RESET ALL > YES > thenclick on the ‘ticked’ language (in my case English). You now have the option to select Rest of the World, North America, etc.
Anyway, thanks for the great tips on this forum guys an’ gals.
As an oldie who has bugg**ed his hearing many years ago and who also has a X mini speaker he wants to power up - a BIG thank you to all who have posted here and made my Sansa Clip a great device - again. The EU regs appear to be “one size fits all” and thats that.
Happy to be a “North American” at what ever volume I choose.
Thankyou So so much, like you downloaded the latest firmware and found out they replaced the volume (high, low) for ‘replay gain’ was totally gutted. The extra volume is excellent (not all the time however) for the underground as i live in London (UK). what is it with this EU ■■■■, you said it, ‘leave us alone and let us make are own minds up’ as a people we are informed enough to make are own judgements.
Again thankyou so much feza i am happy again. . . :smileyvery-happy:
Thanks! I have just this past week had problems with my sound level suddenly dropping, so I was delighted to find there is an easy solution to the problem! Great!
