I s this thing a joke?

I’m really not too happy right now.  I bought this from Tiger Direct along with an “A-Data” 4ig Micro SD, it got here two days ago.

The thing recognized the SD card once, but never again.  I managed to get a little over 100 songs on the 2Gig internal memory before it suddenly quit working.  Now, whenever I try to drag a song into it, I get an error message saying that the device is disconnected or has stopped responding, even though the little dog animation is still on and the “Connected” message is displayed on it.

i have updated the firmware, then tried to roll it back with the link given in that other thread (Thanks, proxima) but I still can’t get thsi silly thing to cooperate.

I’d like to keeo it because it is a perfect design if it would just work right.

Here is what they sent me.  I’ll have to try it later when I get home.  I will let everone know if it works.

Hello,

Thanks again for contacting SanDisk Technical Support.

To fix the issue you are having with your player, you will need to apply a firmware update while the player is in recovery mode.

To enter recovery mode:

  1. Disconnect and turn the player off.

  2. Turn the hold switch on top of the player on, so the orange is showing.

  3. While holding the record button down, plug the Sansa into the computer, and coontinue holding the record button for 5 seconds.

  4. You will then see a message displayed on the Sansa about entering USB recovery mode. If not, repeat steps 1-3.

Once the player is in recovery mode, please download and run the firmware utility, located at the following link:

http://www.sandisk.com/assets/file/downloads/firmware/e200fw01.00.12.exe

Follow the utility’s on-screen instructions. When it asks you if you want to format the Sansa, choose no.

After you are finished updating the firmware, disconnect the Sansa. Watch the screen of the Sansa and when it says “Keys locked, system shutdown” turn the hold switch off, and power the Sansa on.

If you still get the same error, place the Sansa into recovery mode and run the firmware utility again, only this time when it asks you if you want to format the Sansa, choose yes. This will erase everything that is on the Sansa.

The reason why the Micro SD card is not working is because the Sansa only supports up to 2GB cards. We will be releasing a firmware update soon that will provide Micro SDHC support.

If you should have further questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reply to this e-mail or contact our Technical Support department at 866-SANDISK (866-726-3475). Have a great day and thank you for choosing SanDisk.

PS: If applicable, please take a moment to update your Ebox account with product as well as personal information (no P.O.BOX). Please include place and date of purchase of the product.

um, dont do that. Thats e200 firmware, not meant for your express. Seems like the tech made a mistake.

Now if you update your device to this new firmware 1.01.05, then your 4G microSD would be readable and working.  I think the old firmware don’t support SDHC.  If you go read the thread on how to update to the new firmware, then follow that instruction and you should be able to get your Express working fine.

Bah!  They sent me instructions for e200?
Geez, what a bunch of tools.

It says I’m running 01.01.05A.  I think I just got a lemon.  I’d be willing to exchange it for another one.  I wonder if I should go through Tiger Direct or directly through SanDisk.

i would say it depends on who can get you a new one faster. Sandisk takes about a week to ten days total from the time you send it in to the time you get a new one.

This is becoming kind of amusing, albeit frustrating:

There is no “record” button that I am aware of on the express. The people on your message board say that you accidentally sent me instructions for the e200. I’m running Windows XP, by the way and Media Player 11, even though I don’t really use that, I just drag the songs from one folder to the Sansa folder. It’s possible I just got a lemon and would like to know that, should I need to exchange it, if I should go through Tigerdirect.com or directly through you guys. Thanks for your help, though…

Hello,

Thanks again for contacting SanDisk Technical Support.

I sent the e200 instructions because you said in your original email that you had an e200. You will be receiving an email within the next 24 hours containing files and instructions for applying these files. Please let us know if this does not fix your Sansa.

If you should have further questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reply to this e-mail or contact our Technical Support department at 866-SANDISK (866-726-3475). Have a great day and thank you for choosing SanDisk.

Hey, thanks. I actually copied and pasted the questions posted from your message board that needed to be answered, which included several model numbers, but I answered that I have an express: “Model Type: Such as Sansa Connect, e200R, e200, etc. Specific models such as e280R, e250 are also acceptable. Sansa Express 2.0 GB 1.” No big deal, though, the paragraphs get all smushed together. I had originally separated the answer I gave from the rest of it.

What firmware file?  I already downloaded 01.01.05A and I’m still having the same problems.

Oh well, we’ll see what happens.  At least they are trying.

That’s the error message I got.  The properties graph shows that I still have 1.27 Gigs of memory left on the internal storage.

The other issue being that it won’t recognize the 4Gig MicroSD card in it, but they said that future versions of the firmware will support a card that big, but I think they were referring to the e200.

The current firmware should be okay up to 8GB. Maybe it’s a compatibility issue with A-Data cards? The recent compatibility fixes were focused on the (far more common) Kingston and PNY cards. I know I’ve never personally seen an A-Data flash memory card and they don’t have quite the same retail recognition, so it’s definitely possible that the issue just hasn’t come up yet with any real frequency.  You might want to try a different MicroSD card.  You can also try formatting the player and the card.

what OS system are you running?  are you using Linux?  As for the 4GB microSD, the new firmware 1.01.05 supports up to 8G already.
