Help please USB malfunction windows does not recognize

I am trying to access photos from my recently deceased brother’s Sansa mp3 player from 2007-ish?

I can power on and listen to his music but there are photos that can not be accessed.

When I try connecting to my computer a pop up states the USB device malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it.

Please assist with any suggestions please and thank you for your help.
