I know there a already several threads here discussing this problem, however none has a solution for my problem
I received my Sansa Fuze a few days ago and I thought it was a wonderful little player … until today, when my computer stopped recognizing the device. When I plug it in the blue circle shows up and it first says “Writing”, then stays on with “Connected” in the display. The battery doesn’t charge in this mode and my computer (Windows XP SP2) says “Unknown device”. Tried that on two other Vista machines -> same result. The device is not recognized (in auto mode, in MTP mode and in MSC mode).
In Linux the log says:
Jul 25 13:02:06 refrigerator kernel: usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
Jul 25 13:02:06 refrigerator kernel: klogd 1.4.1, ---------- state change ----------

Tried resetting the device (10 seconds power), tried to press << while connecting, reformated it, reset to factory settings … nothing worked.
btw: the battery charges when plugged into a wall charger and firmware is already the latest version (and I could not update it, because I cannot connect to the device).
The problem seems fairly common as every third thread here claims their Sansa Fuze stopped working. Any additional tipps I could try?
thank you for the advice, but I already tried that and the device isn’t recognized on computers it has never been connected to before. The strange thing is that the Fuze seems to recognize other computers (as it says “connected” on the display) … I’m clueless.
As the Fuze is new, try using the Format command on the device to clear the deck. Go to Settings > System Settings > Format > Yes.
Then plug her in and see if we’re successful.
I know formatting deletes the music on the device, but this just might resurrect things for you. I love the addition of a stand alone format option on the new generation of players.
My daughter had the exact same problem with her fuze on her laptop. It worked fine on my laptop. After trial and error, I realized it was the USB setting. The fuze comes from the factory setup for auto detect. This is why you saw the connect/write/connect etc. If you disconnet the fuze, go to settings, select usb setting and select MSC instead of auto detect, I think this will solve your problem. Her’s work perfectly after making that change.
That worked!!! i updated my 8gb sansa fuze just recently with the new firmware, but i noticed that after i updated it, my windows XP was not able to recognize it. Thanks for the help!!! i guess perhaps i should have done this first before formatting my sansa … lost all of my songs…
again,
THANKS for the help with the sansa!! much appreciated!
Here’s a solution that worked for me and it was simple. To tell you a story, I purchased my Sansa Fuze 8GB at Best Buy. I followed the instructions and installed the software provided on the disk provided with purchase. After trying for 2 days and contacting Sansa Helpdesk, they told me the unit was bad.
I returned it to Best Buy and had the same problem. I then connected my Sansa to my laptop and it found it and installed it no problem. Now for the solution… Do a search, including hidden folders (Start>Search>All Files and Folders>More Advanced Options>check Search Sytem Folders, Search for hidden files and folders, Search Subfolder… Under Search for any or all of the criteria below under "All or part of the file name: type SANSA…Once the search is complete, delete ALL folders. Be sure to delete all related files under the "control panels > Add or Remove software.
After you have deleted all files, reboot your computer and once it has completely started-up, connect your Sansa to the USB port, preferrably a rear USB port. Let Windows recognize and install the software (be certain you have Windows XP SP2 [XP3 preferred] and Media Player 11 - you can download both free from Microsoft), once done, reboot your computer and you are set to enjoy your Sansa Fuze 8GB!
That worked for me! Thanks! I was able to use my new Fuze right away on my desktop, but my laptop would not recognize it. I changed the setting as you suggested and now it works!
