Transfer from USB to Network Backup

Currrently back up my Laptop with a “My Book Essential” using a USB cable.  Would like to transfer to backing up using a Network by hooking the" My Book" to a wireless router.  Any special procedures or will the WD smartware detect the drive when hooked to the router.

Unfortunately his drive has not been designed for network use. The WD Smartware probably wont recognize the drive.
