Sansa Recovery Error

It is in pieces, seriously I did everything you guys suggested and I am very thankful. I did change de parameters, recreated the .bat, etc, etc!. I also called Sansa support and even they couldn’t help me. Even though S. Connect has been discontinued they tried to help!

Im having the same problem (before running over my sansa with the car - for the price, its still a great media player; Im not giving that up but it would be so much cooler if it had wifi access). I downloaded the firmware and copied and pasted the batch file:

zsi_fw.exe -w everest_vmlinux_ext_prod_1.1.1.50239.srr.e everest_initrd_ext_prod_1.1.1.50239.srr.e
zaprecover.exe -t 600000 -f yeverest_zap_ota_rel_1.1.2.65799.tar.gz.e yeverest_zap_ota_rel_ext_prod_1.1.2.65799.sig

All the files exist. When I run the batch file, it recognizes the files but then says:

Open USB Device Start

device failed to open

Ive tried on multiple computers and multiple usb ports on each computer; Ive tried it command line as well as running the batch file. I have also tried the Device Recover application but it says it cannot restore my device and I must call SanDisk. I have not tried a new cable - I only have one and Im not investing 30% of the value of the device for a cable that, based on previous responses, wont work.

A few things; I cannot get the sansa to go into recovery mode - I have shut down the device, held down the right zing button and the increase volume button together while pressing the power button. Ive held the two buttons for 10 seconds, 20 seconds, and close to a minute but in all cases the connect boots up like normal. So when I try to run the batch file of Device Recovery app its with the device in normal operational mode. Second, I had installed the Updater then uninstalled it when I couldnt get the above to work to see if it made a difference, but I have never installed any drivers on the assumption that it wasnt necessary. The Device Recovery app comes with a tool called DPInst which claims to install drivers but it doesnt appear to do much. Since communication with the device seems to be the problem, perhaps a driver may be necessary? If I could get this thing working, I could move on to much more important things in my life which have unfortunately become second priority now that Im obsessed with this. Would be very appreciative of any help.

If you can’t put the Connect into recovery mode, the utilities for updating the firmware won’t work.  That’s why you’re getting the “device failed to open” error.  It sounds like you’re doing the button presses fine, so I’m not sure what’s happening.

FWIW, here’s a log of a successful firmware install using the “recovery.bat” file I described in my original post.  My comments are between “(***” and “***)”.

Thanks. I am guessing the right Zing button doesnt work. When the screen dims but is still visible, pressing any button on the unit, including the left Zing button in cases where the left Zing button doesnt do anything, brightens the screen. This doesnt happen when I press the right Zing button indicating a lack of response. Im returning it for a new unit and hope that will resolve the issue. Thanks again.

Hi there! I’m kind of new to this website and I saw that your Sansa is the same version as mine.

Do you think you can help me? My sansa is not working. My USB is in fine condition. I ordered it

on EBay. Its still new and well, I’ve only had it for a month and it stopped working. First it wouldn’t

turn on because it died of battery. I charged it until it was full. When I turned it on, it restart, and then

it says “Repairing media list” after that, it pops up saying “Error, please wait…” after that, it starts

all over agian. Was yours like that? Or in a different situation? Think you can help me fix my sansa?

I’d be soooo happy if you can. Thanks!

Run the Sansa Connect Recovery Tool:

http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/863

If this is successful, and you then want to restore the WiFi functions, follow the steps here:

http://forums.sandisk.com/sansa/board/message?board.id=connect&thread.id=2515

Is there another way for me to fix it rather than

downloading the the Recovery tool?

Fully charge the Connect, then hold the power button down for at least 20 seconds to force it to reset.  If that doesn’t work, I think your only other option is to use the Recovery tool.

Well, I’ve been doing that. The Connect is fully charged like always and

my computer will not accept the Recovery Tool downloading thing. Every

time i hold the button down for 20 sec, it’ll say “Repairing Media files” then

“error, please wait” then it starts all over again.

What do you mean about your computer not accepting the Recovery Tool?  You can’t install it?  Are you running Vista?

I guess you could say i cant install it. But as its progressing to install the Recovery Tool,

when it gets to the last stage of installing something else, it’ll automatically stop and

say some weird stuff with a big red x and some jumbo up together letters.

If you really want help with this, you’re going to need to give us more specific information.  “Say some weird stuff” doesn’t tell us what’s going on.

Ok…so…my computer cannot download the recovery file for some reason i dont know why. But

my older sister’s laptop can, and its not helping…this is the log:

Sorry, I had to re-type it cause for some reason my sister’s laptop cannot transfer files to

other computer. But yeah…this is what it says. Its not really the recovery tool i download from this

site. I googled “Free sansa recovery tool download” and it gave me lists of it. I choose the very first one

(forgot which one) and downloaded. yep…and when i’m installing the one given from this site…when i’m

half way done installing…this pops up:

The “device failed to open” indicates that the recovery tool couldn’t communicate with the Sansa Connect.  Are you sure the Sansa is in recovery mode?  Follow these steps to put it into recovery mode:

http://mp3support.sandisk.com/tools/connect-recovery-instructions.pdf

Make sure that the Sansa displays that “Recovery Needed” screen … that indicates that it’s in recovery mode.  Then connect it to the USB port and run the recovery tool.

Also, the recovery tool will not install on Vista.  That’s why you’re seeing the “DPInst” error.  If you’re trying to run the recovery tool on Vista, you’ll need to manually run the tool, as described in the second post on this page:

Not sure why, but I’ve been running the tool on Vista with no problem.  I *did* have a problem when I followed those instructions in the 2nd post on the link, but it may work for others (I don’t recall, but I think when I installed it in C\Program Files as instructed, I couldn’t find the dlls).

But my Sansa does not display “Recovery Needed” it starts up…then goes to saying recovering media…

then it says error…and starts all over again…

If you’re attempting to install firmware, and your Sansa doesn’t say “Recovery Needed”, you’re not following the process correctly to put it into recovery mode.  Make sure you’re following the instructions in steps 2 and 3 in this document:

http://mp3support.sandisk.com/tools/connect-recovery-instructions.pdf

If you’re starting your Sansa after installing firmware, but getting the “recovering media” message … did you put any media (songs or video) on the Sansa after installing firmware?

Message Edited by PromisedPlanet on 11-23-2009 12:12 PM

I haven’t install the firmware…my computer for some reason can not allow me to install the firmware…

I was able to download some songs and videos into it but the videos didn’t work so i deleted

them from the sansa.

I would recommend reinstalling the firmware.  You say your computer doesn’t allow you to do this, but have you tried it since your previous post showing the install log?

I have try reinstalling it 20 times but the “DPInst” error keeps coming up.
