Five days ago I received a reposition for my 1gb sansa Express, today it stop functioning just like the first one did.
I have to praise the customer service for the prompt reply to my RMA, but I´m begining to believe after reading all those posts, that the Express in the name means how fast it breaks.
I did everything mentioned in this post before sending for a replacement the last time, now did all over again, nothing happens. When connected to the PC it shows connected in the device, two letters in the explorer in my case I: and F: but when u click in one of them it ask to insert a disk the first letter is the internal memory, the second the slot for the mini sd.
No way to format or update firmware. Does anyone have any new solutions for the matter or RMA is the solution ?

Guess I´ll have to send for a replacement again.
if you have a micro sd card put it in the device then turn it on. i have read on other forums this may resolve the issue. not sure but worth a try.
Why bother with all these worries - I j ust phoned their Technical Support and they agreed with the local distributor that I could send it to them for a replacement. Now I’m waiting to see if this one works for any longer than my planned holiday.
I had the same problem with my Sansa Express and was ready to send the junk back too! This one was purchased in August, but I bought the 2 yr extended warranty and see I’m going to need it.
Anyway, I found this forum and found a fix at http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/Default.aspx?CatID=1376 . I downloaded the Sansa Firmware Updater and followed it’s instructions, pulled down the update and I’m back in business with only one caveat. The update reformatted the entire unit which means I’ll need to reload everything again, but at least it now works.
I’m crossing my fingers that it doesn’t die again! If it does, Sansa will be replacing it!
Wow! I’m glad I ran into this forum. I was considering buying a Sansa Express - that was my reason for the search - BUT NOT NOW! It looks like too many people are having too many problems for which there are no definite solutions. I hope the SanDisk people read this forum. I registered just to post this. I guess I’ll search another brand. thanks all and good luck to you!
I was having the same problem that my Sansa express wouldn’t power on. When I pressed the power button it displayed the “Sandisk” logo for a few seconds and shuts off. When I would connect to my laptop, sometimes it would not do anything and sometimes display a frozen scrambled image or “charging” except it would be frozen.
I started searching online to fix the problem or I was about to have to purchase a new mp3 player, I found this thread and tried the “Sandisk Memory Card” technique. I went and bought a 1gb Sandisk Memory card and it fixed the problem. I thought I’d just post it on here if anybody else is having the same problem.
I had the same problem and I called in for tech support and they told me that there is a firmware fix on the way that fixes these problems that we are having. They also told me that it probably coming soon within a week or two. I am crossing my fingers for this new firmware release.
I’m frankly upset with Sandisk and their customer service about this seeing that this is a rampant problem with the Express (mine just started the logo flash of death this afternoon because of this problem). I was accused by a represenitive that I didn’t check my files I was transferring to it and transferred a virus to my player (I virus check all files that I’ve recieved from friends and I’m aware that most of the files I have on it were ripped by myself.) This is not how you treat your customers at all by accusing them like that.
If the Sandisk SD card fix is an absolute fix to it, then I’d rather wait for them to deal with my case further because I do not want to make a further purchase from Sandisk.
hey, i’ve had this problem as well. (Obviously) Tried the microSD, it works the thing is charging right now, and I can acess the files from the computer. I think i’ll try the firmware update next, has anyone had any luck with that?
EDIT: Hey, update. The firmware works. I don’t need to use the SD card now, everything works fine. Just gotta re-upload my songs to it now.
Whoa man! I had been using the express as a voice recorder for 2 weeks, collected over 50 files with it (you know, the good list, the bad list). Then I decided that today I’d back them up and transcribe them, but also wanted to update my blog with some photos.
When I plug the Express into the USB port, I only see the external drive (“santastic” ), so I eject the disk and pull the card out. Then the internal storage (“sansabar” ) mounts, and I eject that. (One curious thing is that if you leave the express in the usb slot on a mac, it remounts.) I left it in the slot, but also pushed the microSD card in. Now I got both. Ok, so I copied the images to the microSD (dag, that took forever - last time I’ll use this as a thumb drive!).
On the way to my other computer, I tried to make one last recording. Nothing! It was dead. ZOINKS!! Waaaaaaaay too much to lose! I was scared to death!
I didn’t want to do a hard reset - I didn’t want to lose my notes. Thank G-d for the post about the soft reset (btw, it’d be nice if that was in the manual, or at least in a more prominent spot). I did the soft reset while it was plugged into this computer. Then hit power. Ta-da! YAY! I **immediately** copied my sound files off the d@mn thing.
Now it’s charged again and I’ll try to go back to using it. I’ll try the firmware update too - may as well, since my already-bought microSD is a SanDisk it should still work…
Thanks thanks for this thread - it saved me from losing irretrievable ideas. I’ll be much more careful about backups now.
What is the difference between har and soft reset? I’ve been having the same problem… My computer won’t recognize my mp3, the display shows a little “thing” in the middle of the screen. and when i try to turn it on, the SanDisk logo shows in the display before it turns off again… I tried the driver update, but that didn’t work. someone please tell the different between hard and soft reset???
I had the same problem yesterday after a failed firmware update (complete with the disappearing logo and the little “thing” in the screen). I managed to “debrick” my device by soft-resetting it while it was connected to my computer. See this thread.
A soft-reset is performed by pressing the Volume Up (+) and Select buttons at the same time. This is similar to restarting a desktop computer. As far as I know, a hard reset can only be performed by formatting the device’s internal memory, which requires the device to be operational. A hard reset clears all the files and settings.
The new firmware 1.01.05 just came out a few days ago which fixes this boot up problem. If any of you still have not updated, please do so to prevent any future problem as such (which is very annoying and frustrated). As for me, I updated my device the day the firmware came out and so far my device is working great for me and I hope that others would have their problems solved as well.
I have followed the thread with interest since posting my problem and appreciate the helps along the way. I beg pardon for my ignorance, but I cannot find the firmware version 1.01.05. The Sandisk web site does not list it, and my Express has 1.01.01A. Thanks for the pooled intelligence.
