Both of the units we bought for our kids for christmas have randomly deleted all of the music that was put on. They will play fine, then after being turned off and then on all of the songs are gone.
Please help.

When you say “the songs are gone” do you mean that when you connect the Clip to you computer, you can no longer see them from the computer?
If so, you probably changed the USB mode setting. The computer will only see files added under the current USB mode. Try setting the USB mode back to it’s previous setting.
If however, you mean that when using the player there nothing listed in the Artist/Album/Song lists, then something else is going on. For sure, the Clip wouldn’t delete anything by itself. Either someone chose the Format item in the settings menu (which would delete everything from the player) or someone tried to sync the player using Windows Media Player and did not select anything to sync.
Yep, I mean all songs/albums/playlists, etc. are gone.
Considering that the player was in the hands of my kids, I don’t know for sure what they were actually doing at the moment of delete. They both said that they had turned off the unit. Then turned it back on by using the sliding switch on the side. Now, on this one here it says [empty] in each category. but when I go to system info it says I have 1929MB of memory but only 367MB free, which would imply that the songs are still there somewhere,no? But it also says songs 0, audiobooks 0, etc. The usb mode is checked on auto detect.
I’m a bit baffled.

Maybe at this point it’s best just to reformat and reload your songs. It is possible that the filesystem on the Clip got messed up somehow. Go to the Settings menu and select Format. This will wipe the internal storage clean. Then make sure the desired USB mode is selected. If you didn’t intentionally change it, you should probably use the default “Auto”. Then connect to your computer and reload your songs.
Thanks for your input, I’ll do what you recommend, and see if we keep the songs. I’ll let you know.
Thanks again,

Tell your kids to make sure they dont format the device from the settings menu or else from the computer.
Please tell us the firwmare version. Check Settings> System Info
I had the same problem.Turned it on and it said it was “reformatting”.Everything has been totally erased.I have V02.01.13a
I am also having the same problem that has happened 2 or 3 times to my Sansa Clip - V01.01.11a
Please update the firmware to the latest version to avoid problems.
