I have two black sansa clip 1.0 GB. I have the same problem with both of them. If I connect them to the computer or a wall charger they turn on and work properly. When they are disconnected I can’t even turn them on. I have downloaded updated firmware and I don’t know what else to do.
You might try a reset hold the on off switch up for 15-20 seconds and see if that does the trick.
Also make sure the clip is charged.

Have they fallen recently? Sounds like the lead to the battery has come loose (covered by the 1-year warranty).

You didn’t by any chance get your Clips from a recent woot.com sale, did you? I’m having the same problem.
