Podcasts go in music list, not the podcast list

Yesterday I tried for the first time downloading podcasts through iTunes (I am really new at the MP3 experience).  I tried two ways of getting them into the player, both by dragging the items into WMP for syncing, and also by dragging the files into the podcast folder of the Clip.  I finally found them in the album lists, under the name of the news network.  The system settings showed 0 podcasts, and there were no podcasts in the section for them.

How do I get podcasts to go to their correct place on the Clip? I have the latest firmware.  Thanks.

OK, if you’re getting them from iTunes, first you have to make sure they’re in MP3 and not AAC or m4a format. iTunes will convert them for you. WMP will only put them into the music directory, so don’t bother with it. You’ll have to have your Clip in MSC mode(available in Settings:USB mode) and then you should be able to drag and drop them directly into the podcast folder

The Podcasts directory will show up in Windows Explorer in MTP mode.  I’ve actually had little success when using MSC mode for drag-and-drop.  Right now, MSC on my Clip shows folders “MUSIC”, “PODCASTS”, “AUDIOBOOKS” (all caps) with nothing in those folders.  Yet there is something in each of those folders.  I only use MSC to access the μSD card on Sandisk players that support one.

That probably means you have content in those folders that was put there in MTP mode. Whatever is put there in one mode cannot be seen while in the other mode.  I have never used MTP…and I drag and drop all the time. From what I’ve seen, the only reason to use MTP mode is if you’re using the Rhapsody subscription( or something of the sort) or if you are obsessed with multiple playlist availabilty. The VAST majority of the time, MSC is the way to go. Just ask Tapeworm…

For some reason, WMP wouldn’t recognize the clip, and I had to reintroduce the clip to it after I did the last attempt at transferring the poscast files into the folder.  Afterwards, I had the podcasts in the right place.  I’ll keep playing with it, because I have some favorite news shows that I really like.  The clip was in MSC mode when I first tried dragging, so I don’t understand why it worked this time but not before.  Thanks for your input, and for the info that WMP is not the way to put them in the podcast section.

Don’t worry about being new to the MP3 scene…I didn’t ever have one until early September. There’s a lot of info out there to read and learn. I’m no expert, but I’ve learned alot since then…and you will too:wink:

Thank.  I load a lot of OverDrive Media audiobooks, so MTP is handy for me.  But I knew people always talk about preferring MSC, so couldn’t figure out why I’ve seen such a difference.  I haven’t seen any disadvantage of MTP for drag-and-drop except, as I said, when attempting to access the μSD card.

UPDATE:  Making sure I was in MSC, I plugged in the Clip.  I opened My Computer and opened the file directory of the clip.  I went back to iTunes and right-clicked to convert the podcasts to MP3.  I then dragged the files into the podcast folder.  They are now visible there.  However, when I disconnected the clip, the only podcast on it is an older one that had been deleted from the podcast folder.

Can someone help me figure out what I am missing here?  And would I solve the whole problem by switching to Media Monkey for my media library, which has a podcatcher as part of the program?

Thanks, all.  I’m trying to learn all this media stuff, but there’s a lot still to figure out.

FWIW, I have dragged-and-dropped at least a thousand podcasts from various folders on my PC (the folders where iTunes put them) using MTP mode, and have never had a problem.  99% of the podcasts are MP3 (so I never need to convert), with a rare .m4a or AAC thrown in.

Why not give it another try with a plain old MP3 podcast file from the iTunes where it was dumped.   You could try MTP mode if you’ve got WMP v10 or higher.  I’ve never loaded using MSC mode.  Since the Clip has no μSD card, I see no disadvantage with MTP mode if that works for you.  Others may tell me why that’s wrong.

I’m not sure where to drag it to in MTP.  I tried dragging it to the clip window, but no podcasts appear in the window or the clip, alas.  Interestingly, it shows zero files when there is actually one podcast on the clip.

In MSC, I drag the files,  and the files do appear in the window, but not on the clip.

When I try to drag the files to WMP’s sync column, they don’t appear, either.

What’s going on?  Is this a glitch, and should I reformat?  Or am I doing something wrong?  I have the manual and I’m following instructions, but I am very new to all this…

And another thing.  When I open the music files while connected, there’s a lot of stuff in them that is not on the Clip now, but originally came from WMP 11 and I deleted from the Clip.  However, a lot of what is on the Clip now is not in those files.  What’s going on?

Double click to open the Clip in windows explorer.  Double click the Internal Memory, Find the folder you want to place the files into.

Double click to open that folder.  Then drag and drop your files into the folder.

I did that…page 9 of the manual.  When just I connected again now, however, this time there was furious writing activity without my doing anything more.  When I checked, there were the podcasts I had been trying to get, plus two others I subscribe to but did not drag over.  Could the thing be spontaneously syncing to iTunes when it’s supposed to be set up with WMP 11?

The safest way to guarantee that your podcasts will end up under “podcast” is to rename the Genre field in their ID3 tag to “podcast”.  If you are using WiMP11, you can use the Advanced Tag Editor by right-clicking on the tracks desired, and then editing the genre to podcast.

Bob

I figured it out…it was a newbie error.  I was trying to drag the subscription files, instead of the actual podcast file.  D’OH!!!

Thanks to all who responded to help.

Had the same problem with Podcasts going to music playlists, so tried the approach of changing the Genre tag to Podcast.   Only problem is, Podcast isn’t listed as a Genre in the WMP V10 dropdown list under the Advanced Tag Editor.    Guidance?

So I solved the problem of Podcast or Podcasts not being in the WMP V10 Genre list, you can overtype the entry and it updates the item but does not add the word to the list.

However, after I changed the Genre to Podcast and Podcasts (tried both) and deleted the items from my Sansa clip, I clicked Start Sync and WMP sync’ed them on to the Clip again, but under music where they were before, not under Podcast(s).

Further guidance?

I don’t use WMP, but I can add that Genre tag should be “Podcast”.  If you put it in a folder, the Folder name should be “Podcasts”.  As I understand it, either way (podcasts in folder “Podcasts” with any Genre tag, or podcasts in folder “Music” with Genre tag “Podcast”) will display the files as Podcasts and give you proper resume.
