First, open Disk Management to check the current status of the SD card.

1). If the drive letter is missing, the SD card may not appear in File Explorer even though Windows detects it. In Disk Management, right-click the SD card partition and choose “Change Drive Letter and Paths.” Then click “Add” and assign an available drive letter. After confirming, the SD card should appear in File Explorer and become accessible again.

2). Reinstall the SD card drivers if the card is not properly detected. Open Device Manager, expand Disk drives or Universal Serial Bus controllers, and locate your SD card or card reader device. Right-click it and choose Uninstall device, then remove and reconnect the SD card or restart the computer. Windows will automatically reinstall the correct driver and attempt to detect the SD card again.

3). Use Windows Error Checking to repair file system issues. In File Explorer, right-click the SD card and choose Properties → Tools → Check under the Error Checking section. Windows will scan the SD card for file system errors and attempt to repair them automatically. This method is useful for fixing minor corruption that prevents the SD card from opening normally.

4). Run the CHKDSK command to repair memory card errors. Open Command Prompt as Administrator and type a command such as:

chkdsk X: /f /r

Replace X with the drive letter of your SD card (such as D or E). The /f parameter fixes logical file system errors, while /r scans for bad sectors and recovers readable data. The process may take some time depending on the size and condition of the SD card.

If the CHKDSK utility reports that “CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives,” it means the SD card’s file system has become RAW, which usually indicates severe corruption or formatting issues. In this situation, Windows cannot repair the file system directly. The recommended approach is to use professional data recovery software to scan the RAW SD card and recover important files first. After recovering the data, you can reformat the SD card to a supported file system such as FAT32, NTFS, or exFAT. Reformatting will restore the card to normal use. If your SD card appears corrupted and your photos and videos are missing, do not use the card further. Continuing to record or copy files may overwrite the lost data and reduce recovery chances.

First, remove the SD card and connect it to a computer using a reliable card reader. Check if the card is detected in Disk Management or Finder.
