One best troubleshooting for the sansa express if ever it freezed up or wont start we can insert a micro sd card and try to restart and also format the system. 
The piece of paper solution does work. Just cut a piece of thin cardboard out, hold down on the menu button, jiggle the piece around until a display comes up. Took me maybe fifteen minutes to get it just right, but it does work. Otherwise, just buy a micro SD card. I’m cheap, so I got it going this way.
Wow how that happen? just a tip it may actually cause physical damaged on your player and it will voids the warranty so take very extra carefull.
The micro SD card worked for mine too. Woke it right up. Thanks to all who posted to this thread.
