music not visible

I am attempting to transfer music from my pc to my Clip Zip using drag and drop. I have the Clip in MSC mode. I plug the clip into my computer. My pc auto opens my Clip’s folder. I do not get an option to choose an internal memory or external memory folder, it just goes straight to my Clip’s folders. In the root directory the available folders are: ALBUM, AUDIBLE, AUDIOBOOKS, MUSIC, PODCASTS, RECORD, and SPORT. There are also four system files shown in the root directory. I move my mp3’s into the MUSIC folder. I unplug my Clip, navigate to the MUSIC folder and choose Play All. I get an error message stating No Song. While still in the MUSIC folder, I navigate to folders and choose Internal Memory. I get the same error message stating No Song. The same thing happens when i put my music on a MicroSD card. I have the latest firmware installed. Please Help!

Connecting in MSC mode, the Sansa is seen as a basic flash drive. Sounds like you are having an issue either with the transfer, or the embedded ID3 tags on your music files.

First, start with a single music file. Is it an mp3 format file? This media format is the most universal, though the Zip understands many formats, including wma, ogg, flac,  aac (the DRM-free version), and Audible aa formats.

On your PC, check the metadata on this file. This is very important for the Sansa, as it finds your music based upon this information. This is the album / artist / song / genre information, and embedded album art images.

I really like Windows 7, as once you click on a media file, the ID3 tag information is shown at the bottom of the explorer window. Windows Media Player will also allow editing or adding ID3 tags.

Hands down, my favorite ID3 tag editor is MP3Tag, available on line.  The Sansa needs ID3 v2.3 ISO 8859-1 (Latin-I) format tags.

Ok I got it working. Thanks for the help.

    I have what seems to be the same issue.  I copy a bunch of files from various netcasts over to a directory on the Clip Zip, then use the play from folder feature to play them.  However, only some of the files show up via the Clip Zip interface.

    Everthing downloaded from All Things Considered - http://www.npr.org/programs/all-things-considered, Freakonomics - http://www.freakonomics.com/feed, Marketplace Money - http://www.marketplace.org/shows/54/podcast.xml, and Radiolab - http://feeds.wnyc.org/radiolab, show up and work fine.

    Nothing from Dinner Party - http://americanpublicmedia.publicradio.org/podcasts/xml/dinner-party/podcast.xml, Quirks and Quarks - http://www.cbc.ca/podcasting/includes/quirksaio.xml, or Science Friday - http://www.cbc.ca/podcasting/includes/quirksaio.xml shows up at all.

    All seem to have ID3 v2 tags.  Here’s the output of a tagtool dump for an episode of each working netcast:

jason@rooibos:/tmp/tag$ for J in 20121021_atc_02.mp3 freakonomics-101712.mp3 mrktplcmny-20121019.mp3 radiolab-20121008-darkside.mp3; do tagtool --dump “$J”; done

Gorilla Glass is not unbreakable. But it is twice as durable as regular glass, at half the thickness.

    Any ideas?

===========

    While scanning through messages in the rest of this forum about various Clip Zip issues, I stumbled upon Rockbox - http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/WhyRockbox.

    It seems the solution to this issue and to the various playlist issues, display issues, etc., is to install Rockbox - http://download.rockbox.org/daily/manual/rockbox-sansaclipzip/rockbox-build.html.

    I did, now playlists work properly, elapsed and total time of a playing file are displayed, and I can play all of the files that I couldn’t play before.

    SanDisk should stop developing their own Sansa firmware and start contributing to Rockbox - http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/DevelopmentGuide.
