I made a custom equalizer for my rock music and it sound much better than the rock equalizer that comes with the Clip, it also sounds a lot better than the normal equalizer as well.
I would love to know the settings on the preset equalizers. I have played with the custom settings some, but have never found the right mix. I have found the jazz setting to be the the one that generally sounds best to me on almost all types of music. Thanks, I will give these numbers a try!
I tried the settings above, and I do like them. Quite a bit “brighter” than the “rock” setting on the Clip. One of the things I was having trouble when playing with the Equalizer was getting some bass oomph, without getting “muddy.”
I still would like to get the setting mumbers for each of the canned equalizer settings.
I agree with Jazz being the best preset eq. but I made my own overall…
About ackers’ custom eq. I find it to be good… but to me is very important the voice of the songs… so those “-2” take that away from me…
I prefer: +5 +3 +4 +7 +5
This get me close to the Jazz preset but im actually gaining volume here…
Note that every single person hears different from each other… (ear shape, ear health, music taste…) so to prefer an eq. setting is like choosing between earbuds or headphones… just need to try it to see which one sounds better to you…

Wow, BUC! That is an awesome preset eq. I gained volume, too. I’m getting a FiiO Headphone Amp from DealExtreme.com, and I wonder how’ll it sound with that preset, my Cyber Acoustics noise canceling headphones, and the general awesomeness of the Clip itself. Thanks!
All the best,
Brad

Wow it must be a “different ears” thing cuz I just tried your settings and it sounded quite tinny with no oomph. I definitely prefer my eq.
Btw were you playing rock music?
Maybe this is why some people say the FX66’s IEM’s are amazing and some even say better than the CX300’s but for me I don’t think the FX66’s are that good and I actually prefer the CX300’s (in terms of sound quality).
I tried yours but im not fan of tons of bass and tinny voice…
I was playing rock music while making my eq curve… but I was keeping in mind that I play all of my music in shuffle mode… so I dont want to change my eq. settings every 2 or 3 songs… sooo I tried to make it similar to the Jazz settings (which by the way seems to be the more popular) and also to gain volume… In my ears and with my headphones it works… then again for you might be different…
When I got my Cyber Acoustic ACM-800 noise canceling headphones, I switched to Jazz, and it really suited my listening tastes (and my music really runs the genre gamut), but BUC’s custom eq afforded me more volume which I really wanted and appreciated.
But, yes, it’s all a matter of taste. And whatever works for you, do that.
BUC, BTW, have you heard of the FiiO E3 headphone amp? Miikerman posted a little about it in this forum, and I ordered one this week.
All the best,
Brad

Yeah I read about it… but I live in south america so I prefer t buy my electronic devices whenever I get the chance to travel to the US… over the internet but I have to mail it to an US address… cause I dont trust overseas shipping…
anyway sounds very cool… but I havent had any needs for amplification… as a matter of fact right now I work with power tools… (plasma cutters, welding machine, grinders… and so on) and even though my headphones are not noise cancelation (I think they are kind of noise isolation) I can hear my music just fine… no need to turn up the volume above the normal operation for me…
But it does really sound tempting… very cheap… and my movies on the Archos could use a little more volume…
+6 +4 -2 +3 +7 here. probably could be tweaked a little further, i did this pretty quick. sounds good with loud volume and rock, metal etc ( using koss sporta pro )
Very interesting thread. What I would like to know is the center frequencies and the width of each EQ band. I mostly use the Clip with a pair of Sennheiser MX500, the sound is amazing, using this values:
+5 +3 +3 +2 +4
I find the Jazz setting a little too bright for this earphones, but is fine for the original ones and a pair of fairly good Aiwas I have (air cushion, very comfy). The Normal setting is OK but has an annoying presence peak for me, so I made this tweak, lowering the 4th band and giving a loudness like effect (both bass and high up). In general, the EQ attenuates the sound (try putting all in zero, play a song and then adjust any band even 1 step and you’ll notice that), so you need high base values to get the same volume level as the Normal setting. That’s why we are all using high numbers here. In Hi-Fi equipment is recommended to EQ without boosting, like the equivalent curve +0 -2 -2 -3 -1 and rise the volume, but I’ve tried it and sounds way too low in the Clip. Finally, this is all a matter of taste not an exact science. If you see BUC’s curve, is very similar to mine except for the 4th band boost (he loves what I hate, hahahah), fuflo makes an almost perfect V loudness setting and ackers likes the sine way. I’ve written down the numbers to seriously try the three settings later…:smileyvery-happy:
although you cannot do it to only one instrument, knowledge of it helps. Also, find out what frequencies approximately the clip adjusts. In addition, find out the frequency response of your headphones - that is the most important thing that makes these settings sound different to everyone else. For example, sennheiser canalphones typically have quite a bit of bass, while MX500’s do not.
Btw, I’m using JVC FX-66 IEM’s… I didn’t really take into account the sounds will be different with different earphones but those are the best settings for those phones IMO. It really gives music a “boost”.
Ok here’s my setting. I often change it so it’s not my “ultimate” setting but it’s the kind of sound i like on my Clip:
+2 +2 0 +7 +7
I use with a Denon D1001 and it’s quite loud for such a tiny player. You guys may put more bass with cheaper headphone (like i also do with my AKG K314 when i go out). Otherwise it’s similar to the Jazz mode, with less bass and clearer highs.
