Help please. I have a 1tb micro sd that displays as “raw” and when inserted, prompts a format. When i try formatting in windows i get a message “windows could not succefully format” or similar. I have tried the below
DISKPART - clean, format, remove write lock.
Disk genius- erase disk, format, delete partition

None of these actions change the scenario. Any suggestions?

Have you turned off the write protection switch on your SD card? If you receive the error message “Windows was unable to complete the formatting,” it’s advisable to first remove the write protection from the SD card.

Here is how to remove write protection from SD card using Diskpart:

  • Put your SD card into your computer’s card reader.
  • Press Win + R, type cmd, then press Enter.
  • Right-click on Command Prompt and choose “Run as administrator.”
  • Type diskpart and press Enter.
  • Type list disk and press Enter. Find your SD card in the list (it’s usually labeled by size).
  • Type select disk X (replace X with the number of your SD card) and press Enter.
  • Type attributes disk clear readonly and press Enter.

After removing the write protection, please try to format the SD card using CMD again. This blog gives more solutions about Windows cannot format SD card.

There are a lot of discussions on forums about problems with formatting SD cards. Some users have recommended trying the Bitraser tool. I haven’t used it myself, so if you decide to try a third-party tool for formatting, make sure to do your research first.
