So I decided to update my firmware after I was having issues with it hanging when it was refreshing media. After it installed drivers onto the computer when I connected it, for some reason it now appears as a removable flash drive not the Sansa Fuze icon which I use to get. Is this normal ?
As well as this all my media no longer appears when I search for it - it is still there I just cant see it.
Is there a way to fix this apart from reformatting?
Did this firmware update actually solve the problem of it hanging on the “refreshing your media” screen. Thought it would but when I tried transfering some files it gets stuck on 100%
Refreshing your media problem usually means there is something in your media that the Sansa is choking on.
It might be some glitch in the database, the index of your files. You can try deleting MTABLE.SYS in the Fuze drive. That’s the database. After you delete it, the Fuze will reconstruct it from scratch as it reboots–that’s what it’s refreshing–and your problem may disappear.
Or it may not. There may be an ID3 tag on one or more of your files that the Fuze is choking on. It’s not as flexible as the much bigger brain of your computer. Personally I doubt any firmware update will ever fix the problem completely.
If ID3 tags are the problem, your best move would be to make sure you have copies of anything you have put on the Fuze and then format it under Settings/System Settings. That erases everything you put on. Then load it back on, little by little, until the Sansa chokes again, take off your most recent addition, and try again. (Possibly erasing MTABLE.SYS again.)
I backed up all the files which worked (loaded everything on one album at a time). When I load the entire folder - that is when I get the problem. I’m guessing it isn’t to do with bad tags.
I’m loading it in MTP mode. The problem seems to be with sd card. Never happened when I was loading onto the fuze’s internal memory.
When the device hangs in “refreshing your media” I have to force it to shutdown. The only way I can by pass that screen is by connecting it back to the computer and reformatting the uSD card (folders appear empty as well even though it there is used space).
I haven’t reformatted the fuze yet don’t know if it’s worth it?
If I do do I need to reinstall the latest firmware or will it still be there?
Formatting it leaves the firmware untouched. It only removes what you have added. It’s like detox.
Are you using Windows Media Player to manage it in MTP mode? Because if not, if you’re just doing drag-and-drop, MTP mode can do strange things (like losing tags). MSC is straightforward drag-and-drop, as if the Fuze is a flash drive.
Back up your files, format, and put them back on in one USB mode (MTP or MSC, not Auto). I prefer MSC unless you have files with DRM–they have to go through Windows Media Player and MTP to transmit the digital-rights info.
Nothing I have tried has worked for me so far. However I have noticed one thing. I’m using a 4Gb v2 Fuze with a Kingston 16Gb microSD card, when I place songs onto the uSD card like 1.5Gb at one time it will be fine, however if I put more on after that it will freeze up at the Refreshing your media screen and thats only putting a small album (mp3 format). Very odd since I had placed that album on before without any problems so I doubt it will be due to bad tags.
I have formatted my uSD more than 15times because that is the only way I can get past the refreshing your media screen. This is getting to be very annoying as one of the main reasons I bought the Fuze was so that I could expand its capacity.
No matter what songs I put on it never exceeds 560 songs. I had about 400 songs on the internal memory and the rest is stored on the uSD I have removed all the comments and only left artists, album, track number, year and genre. All tracks are saved as ID3v2.3. It is okay if place about 160 songs on at once (on the uSD card) - that is fine, anymore and the fuze will freeze up.
Yeah I read that link you posted earlier and I have it as ID3v2.3 ISO-8859-1. I think I have it right most under tags on the files in Mp3tag it shows “ID3v2.3 (ID3v2.3 ID3v2.3)” is that correct? Quite possibly I may have made a mistake when doing this so could someone clarify because if I’m honest I am noob
However I am not sure if it is the tags because when it freezes on the “refreshing your media” screen, the album I had just put on refreshed fine when I loaded it prior to it reaching somewhere in the 560 songs mark. It is the last album i put on around the point which causes it to freeze.
I formatted again. This time I removed all album art and got rid of composers etc so that it would be consistent across my entire library. STILL it freezes at about 560 songs.
I found the same problem quite disturbing as well as the sound level seems to be way too low now and changing the settings of the Replay Gain doesn’t seem to help at all.
Hi.Idid the Update, too.Damage!!! When using it outsid, music isnt to hear any more! What means normal quiet, who decide this. Please reply, how you will go on with this. It is very quiet.Expensive Headset cant make it better:-(
One importand thing missing, which is poosibility of change loudness (overall volume level)…
Now all my music can be played at normal level which sometimes means too quiet…
Whats up with that Sansa?

Did any of you think to look at the change log for the firmware update?
Enhancements:
•Max volume level is lowered in Normal volume setting to comply with new European Union requirement
•Playback performance of mono WAV and FLAC files is improved
