Try all the USB ports. I prefer the back USB port near the power supply (Desktop).
Check the Device Manager for yellow triangles of doom! Uninstall the device in the Manager, reboot, then plug in your Clip, allowing Windows to reinstall the driver.

In XP I had the same problem. For me the solution was to force MSC mode on the “Settings” / “USB Mode” menu…
thanks a lot for the help… but none of the options u mentioned is working on my laptop…
On the device select Settings > USB Mode > MSC. Plug in and see that the device is recognized as a flash drive.
While it’s plugged in this mode, have a look at the battery icon: is it charging?
If you loaded your original music in MSC mode, you’re good to go.
If you used MTP mode previously, repairing the MTP protocol is where your problem lies. Using Auto Detect, the Clip sees that the PC has MTP capability, and is trying to connect in MTP.
Repairing the MTP pipeline is a case study in Microsoft’s soup sandwich of updates. The most basic thing to start with is to select MTP manually on the Clip, plug in to the computer, and look for the yellow triangle again in Device Manager. Uninstall the device, unplug, REBOOT the PC, and then plug in again.
If that does not restore MTP, download teh MTP Porting Kit from Microsoft, and let us know if you are back in business at this point.
