I would like to ask you a headache-inducing question about data recovery.
I had some very important videos on my SD card, but my brother accidentally deleted them a while ago, and I only discovered this recently when I needed to use them…
I’ve already tried scanning with Recuva and PhotoRec . But strangely, these programs only show the files currently on the card ; they can’t find the deleted videos at all.
I’d like to ask everyone, does encountering this situation mean the file is completely lost (overwritten)? Before giving up entirely, I’d like to post this and ask the experts in the community if there are any other more powerful free/paid tools, or other unconventional methods worth trying?
How much time has passed since your brother accidentally deleted the videos? If anyone continued to record videos, take photos, or write new data to the SD card after they were deleted, the old data would be directly overwritten and can never be recovered.
Additionally, if the card underwent a “low-level format” during this period, or if certain devices (such as some newer smartphones or cameras) performed a zero-fill (similar to a TRIM mechanism) upon deletion, the data would disappear completely.
You can try other more powerful professional recovery software to deeply scan the SD card and check the scan results to see if your important lost video is there. Important: The recovered files must be saved onto your computer’s hard drive and cannot be saved directly back onto the SD card. If the video is extremely important (such as weddings, precious memories, or business footage) and recovery software yields no results, you can send the SD card to a hardware-level data recovery center to have professionals attempt to retrieve the video files. The fact that both Recuva and PhotoRec only see the current files isn’t a great sign, but it doesn’t automatically mean the videos are gone forever. It really depends on what happened after they were deleted.
If the card has been used to take more photos or videos since then, there’s a good chance the deleted data has been overwritten. If it hasn’t been used at all, still try a couple of other recovery tools before giving up. I will suggest Stellar Photo Recovery software and make sure to run a deep scan. If possible, create an image of the SD card first and scan the image instead of the card itself.
I’ve seen cases where one program finds files that another completely misses.
If Recuva and PhotoRec only show the existing files, it doesn’t automatically mean the videos are gone forever, but it does make recovery more difficult. First, stop using the SD card completely to avoid any further overwriting. Also, can you confirm whether the videos were deleted normally, or was the card formatted afterward?
I’d also try a deeper scan with other tools, as they sometimes detect file signatures that other tools miss. If the videos are extremely valuable, avoid repeated scans and consider a professional recovery service—the more the card is used, the lower the chances of a successful recovery.
