Can you recover deleted videos from SD card?

Looking for advice on recovering deleted videos from an SD card. Some important videos were accidentally deleted by my younger brother, and I only found out recently. I’ve tried recovery tools like RescuePro and EaseUS, but they only detect existing files on the card, not the deleted videos.

So, I’m wondering if the files are gone for good. Before giving up completely, I wanted to ask here in case there’s anything else worth trying.

@jamesneedhelp Deleted files can be recovered if the blocks freed by the deleted files have not been written to again. e.g. If you delete a file, blocks are marked for reuse. Data is added to the card and those blocks are overwritten and used by the new data.

Try this this one.

If recovery tools like RescuePRO and EaseUS are only showing existing files, it usually means one of two things: either the deleted data has been overwritten, or the card’s file system no longer has references to those files.

Before giving up, try a deeper scan with a tool like Stellar Photo Recovery, which is designed to detect lost media even when file entries are missing, especially from SD cards. A better way for SD card Recovery.

Also, avoid using the SD card further, as new data can overwrite recoverable files. If the videos still aren’t detected after a deep scan, chances are they’ve been permanently overwritten.

Some devices will send a CMD 38 command to an SD card. This command erases specified sectors.

Your best approach would be to clone the card to an image file on your HDD/SSD and then run data recovery software against the clone. R-Photo is freeware. It handles video and audio files. DMDE is another inexpensive option (US$20). Its free version will recover up to 4000 files of any size from any one folder per click. Both tools can clone your card.

Stop using the card immediately, try deep scan with PhotoRec or TestDisk — they often find files other tools miss.

I have noticed that various cameras and other devices often use weird file systems on a card rather than using the standard exFAT

Was any new content saved to the SD card after the deletion? Once you record new videos or save new photos, the old data is permanently overwritten and can’t be recovered.

Another question: were the deleted videos HD or 4K resolution? As far as I know, large video files (HD/4K) are rarely stored in contiguous blocks; the data is often scattered like puzzle pieces in different locations on the SD card, making it easy for ordinary data recovery tools to miss them.
