Fuze won't turn on

I bought a new Sansa 8GB Fuze for my daughter.  She fully charged it upon opening it.  Now, it rarely turns on at all and if it does, it shuts down again after only a few seconds.  I have tried the soft reset - holding the power button up for 15-20 seconds with no luck.  I also held it up for almost two minutes (twice) and tried restarting, also with no luck.  I tried plugging it inot my computer, but the computer won’t recognize it.  I tried putting it on hold and holding the center button when I plugged it in to force the MSC mode (or whatever it was called - I read in the forum) again with no success.  The device screen shows “connected” and appears to be charging when plugged in, but won’t do anything else.  I’d appreciate any help anyone can give, because instead of this being a nice gift for my kid, I’m getting the “Gee, dad, thanks for the turd-bomb”.  help!

For the power issue:   Try charging to the rear ports of the computer or an USB AC adapter. 

You are doing all the right things.   If its too hard to troubleshoot,  return/exchange it .    The Fuze is a good player,  but if its the love of your daughter your trying to win,  quickly go get her an ipod Nano.   (I hate to say it but its what I would do, LOL),  the Fuze is nice, but most likely her friends will have an iPod and there will be other issues when it comes to video that may cause you more headaches.

Sounds like you’ve been trying the right steps to get it going.

Can you try powering it up, and looking at Settings > System Settings > Info, and reading the installed firmware version?

Here’s the firmware installation instructions for both revisions of the Fuze.  Follow the manual installation method.  Please note that if your Fuze is connecting in MTP mode, you still can successfully install the firmware binary file into the root directory by double clicking on Internal Memory to open the root.

The most common source of a Sansa shutting off is a corrupted music file.  You can try fixing this avenue by running chkdsk on the Fuze while connected in MSC mode.  Use the /f toggle to “fix” the errors found.

Before that, I’d try loading the firmware, then format the device by going to Settings > System Settings > Format > Yes.  Load a few tracks, and see if all is well.

We want to be sure that it isn’t the loaded data that’s causing the device to halt, lest you replace it and end up in the same maddening situation.

The music loaded on your fuze can be mp3 or wma, even OGG or FLAC now.  The critical issue in these files is their embedded ID3 tags (the tag is part of the file standards).  If the tag is messed up, or of the wrong format, the Sansa can have difficulties finding or displaying your file’s information.  The best is ID3v2.3 ISO 8859-1.

Any music ripped with Windows Media Player 10 or 11 will have this standard, and there are applications like the free MP3Tag to edit them too.

Sorry for the long response.  Time for a refill on the java.  Try looking into the firmware, then formatting to clear the decks, and a few sample songs.
