Follow this procedure when the Sansa Connect Recovery Tool won't work!

Wow It seems to have worked. I edited a cmd line today. neat. Thank you very much.

Here’s a log of a successful firmware install using the “recovery.bat” file I described in my original post.  My comments are between “(***” and “***)”.

Hmm, when I run my bat file, I get message saying that it could not open the device? I’m double clicking it and it runs fine, but fails to open the device. I’m using Vista and when i connected it, it installed as Sansa PMP instead of a removable storage device. Could that be why? It’s also connected through a USB hub, but that shouldn’t cause any problems I would think.

.bat lines as I pasted them:

zsi_fw.exe -w everest_vmlinux_ext_prod_1.1.1.50239.srr.e everest_initrd_ext_prod_1.1.1.50239.srr.e

zaprecover.exe -t 600000 -f yeverest_zap_ota_rel_1.1.2.65799.tar.gz.e yeverest_zap_ota_rel_ext_prod_1.1.2.65799.sig

pause

It looks like your Connect wasn’t in Recovery Mode when you connected it to USB (should say “recovery needed” on the screen).  Follow these instructions to put your Connect into Recovery Mode:

http://mp3support.sandisk.com/tools/connect-recovery-instructions.pdf

Thanks! That was the vital missing step. Now I have the radio back on my Sansa Connect. I have a Yahoo account. Where are the instructions for connecting the Connect to the stations or will it prompt for account info when you connect? I have to dig up the key again to my wireless network before I test it. Is having a Yahoo account enough once the key is in or do I have to sign up someplace else?

Thanks for the assistance.

It’ll prompt for account info when you connect.  Having a Yahoo account is enough.

This is just great!  Connect “nowifi” delivered to the door for $33 dollars.  15 minutes later I’m listening to internet radio.  Thanks so much!!!

Now to try some video…

Thank you for your detailed and effective posts regarding the reactivation of WiFi capabilities for the Sansa Connect.  I understand your procedure but I have some comments regarding my situation:

  1. It is October 13, 2009 - has the recovery tool been altered so much now that the WiFi code is no longer in it as implied by another post here?

  2. I don’t even have  a Sansa file folder on the PC I use to rip and burn to my Sansa - is that because I haven’t installed the recovery tool? (I ahve downloaded it however from your link)

  3. I assume all my songs will be deleted in the recovery - is that true or it it just a firmware issue/update - I’ve never done this b4 and this, believe it or not. is my first MP3 player.

The reason I am asking these questions is I don’t want to go through all the steps if the recovery tool has been changed to make any such procedure as you posted moot.

Thanks in Advance  - Kingside

Kingside, I too am a newbie. I followed the directions to the letter, and everything worked as planned. I connect to wifi and everything else is working.

I have a new problem. I formatted windows xp. now my system will not reconize the device. I cannot update drivers in the control panel when I do the following error is displayed :

An error occured during the instalation of this device  :A service installation section in this INF is invalid.

Do I need to go back and start from the beginning with the Recovery Tool?

Sandisk is now providing a version of the recovery tool which downloads firmware ( “recovery images” ) that don’t contain the WiFi code.  This is why you need to download an earlier version of the recovery images, as described earlier.

Yes.  You can go ahead and install the recovery tool so that you have the necessary folder and recovery tool executables, but then download the earlier version of the recovery images and use them as described.

I think any content (songs and video) will be deleted.

The Sansa Connect doesn’t require any special drivers, all it requires is a vaild installation of MTP, which can be done by installing Windows Media Player 10 or higher.

Thank you so much you helped me alot!!!

As a follow up PromisedPlanet - following the procedure cited earlier in this thread - and for which this thread is named - I should have WiFi Radio access through my Yahoo account - will I also have a recorder after this unbricking process -?  I read elsewhere that the 2007 incarnations of this model had an FM recorder - can you verify?

Many thanks for your detailed technical reveals … btw what does Sansa think about all this  - I mean converting these Connects to WiFi ?  And is the fact that they now have a $249 micro SD accessory for WiFi - is that their ‘fix’ to the removed WiFI originally built in to the Connect?

Thanks again,

Kingisde

The Connect doesn’t have an FM receiver, so it can’t record FM.  If you also meant a voice recorder, it doesn’t have a microphone.

No idea what SanDisk thinks about this, I haven’t asked them.  ;-)

I’ve heard of microSD cards with integrated WiFi though I didn’t know that SanDisk made one … are you sure?  Anyway, the device that uses such a card would require firmware to use it, which the Connect doesn’t have.

So, I’ve bought another Sansa Connect, and this time was so easy hahaha.

I can confirm that all songs and video will be deleted after a successful recovery is accomplished.

And I just got another new NOWIFI connect today, white box special.  Thanks to Promised Planet, it is now a YESWIFI.  Both Sansas can run WIFI at the same time, each tuned to different channels.  Pretty cool, and a great gift for about $30.

Thanks again.

Any idea why I’m getting this error during the installation of the Sansa Device Recovery file?  The box pops up 3 times after clicking “ok”.

DPInst result: [-247483648]:

Are you running Windows Vista?  I don’t think the Recovery Tool runs on Vista.

Oh no . . . yes, I’m running Vista 64 bit.  My player now says it’s waiting for the recovery tool and I’m guessing there is now no way to get it to work without running the recovery tool which I can’t do since I have Vista.  Suggestions?

You might want to do a search for “Vista” on this board to see if other people have come up with some solution.

If you don’t find anything, the only thing I can suggest is to install and run the Recovery Tool on some other PC that has XP installed.
