My 8gb clip is on order from Amazon. If a firmwae update is available, is there any way to revert back in the event of a problem. Should I use as is for a while before attempting an update, or is updating normally trouble free.

Update without a thought. Do it the automatic way, not manually, for most reliability. Even if still warm from the factory. they seem to preload some extremely obsolete firmware that you want to get rid of fast.
I find manually updating the easiest–see the upgrade sticky thread at the top of the forum.
If you ever want to downgrade to an earlier firmware, it’s available at the Clip forum at anythingbutipod.com.
Manually is most definitely the way to go

Wow! SanDisk seems to have upgraded the Updater!
I don’t know how ‘automatic’ it is, but the videos on the web show it’s ready, willing & able!
