Error Message when Syncing External Memory on WMP

I just got my Fuze yesterday and used WMP to sync the internal memory and it worked flawlessly.  Later that day, I attempted to sync the external memory via WMP as well, and sometimes it will sync a song or two but everything else pops up with this error message:

Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct.

I don’t understand it because WMP plays the file just fine, and it put the files on the internal memory just fine.  It’s something to do with how the music is transferred to the card?

It’s on MTP mode, the card is an adata 16gb MicroSDHC, and its format is FAT32, I have WMP 11, I’m running Vista, it’s a 4gb black fuze with updated firmware, I don’t know what else I’m overlooking.

Out of desperation, I also tried dragging and dropping my files through windows, and had about 8 albums going, and the window said the file would take 2.5 hours to transfer.  Is that normal?  I originally bought this thing because it was supposed to be simple, now I might have to return it.

Oh, also, when I access the Fuze via Windows, click on the external memory and drag and drop files it has another error, saying that “xxx could not be moved.  You do not have permission to create this file.”  What I said in the above message about being able to drag and drop sloooowly was when I popped out the card and used the adapter to put it in my SD slot.

Tell me there’s a simpler way.

****EDIT*****

I found another MicroSD and tried syncing it… and it works fine.  Could the card be incompatible with the player?  Why?

The microSD should be compatible unless it’s defective.  But Windows Media Player can be annoying.

Unless you got the music from a subscription service with Digital Rights Muck in them, there is no point in using Windows Media Player to transfer files. (It’s necessary to transfer DRM files, however).

WMP… Sometimes it doesn’t like microSD cards because it’s afraid you will pass them around to friends and they’ll make copies and the music business will collapse immediately. Oh, that’s right, it aready did…

On the Fuze, go to Settings/System Settings/USB Mode and change it to MSC. That makes the Fuze work like a generic USB drive. Drag-and-drop or Send To. via WIndows.

And if you ripped your own CDs with the defaults in WMP, you may have copy-protected them with WMP’s default setting of copy-protected .wma. Go into the Rip settings of WMP and see if that’s what it’s set to. Change it to mp3 (at good quality, 192 kbps or above) and there’s no copy-protection nonsense. .

The slow transfer may be some WMP weirdness, or you may have the Fuze connected to a USB port that’s working at the speed of USB 1.0 rather than 2.0.  Laptop ports vary in power and speed. Use one near the back of the computer, for more power, and definitely don’t use a USB hub. Or drag-and-drop onto the card with your adapter.

Also, when I transfer stuff, sometimes I get an initial ridiculous estimate of time, and then it changes after a short time. 8 albums definitely should not take hours.

I switched back to MSC mode and I’m dragging and dropping.  Thank you.

I am still disheartened that I can’t use WMP player though.  It was one of the reasons I bought this mp3 plyer.  On top of that, it still doesn’t explain why the other card (a 1gb sandisk I found in my house when I moved into it) works just fine.

Have you tried WMP now that you’re using MSC mode? I used to use it with my Sansas set to MSC mode…it would be interesting to see if it worked for you that way.

If it doesn’t work, at least now you know that drag and drop will work.

Okay, well, now that I’m dragging and dropping, it’s been like 45 min and it’s still working on transferring about 10 albums…  Is that normal?

Also, in MSC mode, WMP doesn’t even “see” the Fuze (though it is currently busy transferring the music via Windows)

Would I have better luck with a different card?

That’s odd…because WMP11 did see mine on my old XP computer, and even though I don’t use it for my players,  I just plugged my Fuze in and turned on WMP12 on my Win7 computer, and it sees my Fuze, and also the card that is in my Fuze.

But it sure shouldn’t take 45 minutes to transfer 10 albums onto a card. Maybe the card could use a treatment from this…http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter/

Windows Media Player (10) also sees my Fuze. In Full view, click on the right pane–there’s a drop-down menu.  Mine shows the card slot in my computer, the Fuze and its microSD slot (separately) and an external drive I have connected via USB.

That long transfer time is very strange…unless your albums are in FLAC or .wav or some other format that makes large files. My Fuze usually takes 3-5 minutes at most to transfer a typical album of mp3s. But if you’re using .wav, the filesizes will be 10 times larger, and the transfer much slower.

How long does it take to transfer them with the adapter connected to the same USB port?

There’s always the possibility of a defective USB cord, though if the other card works fine with the cord it’s probably not the problem.  Or a slow card (though even class 2 is adequate). Or a slow USB port.

You could try testing the card for defects with H2TestW .

Ok, today when I plugged it in while still on MSC mode, it installed the device again (asked to name it, etc. – dunno why, not gonna question it) and it’s working fully.

I don’t know why it wasn’t working before, but I’ll chalk it up to weird computer nonsense + repeatedly plugging/unplugging my Sansa.

Thanks everyone.

Thanks so much Black-Rectangle!  Just bought a new Fuze and couldn’t get my old audiobooks to transfer.  Your suggestion worked perfectly and everything is now transferred to the new Fuze.

Make sure you can play back the audiobooks before you thank me.

Audiobooks from libraries–NetLibrary, Overdrive–often have DIgital Rights Misery in them and may require Windows Media Player or their own player in MTP mode to send over the digital rights codes. You’ll get a misleading error message about renewing your subscription when you try to play them.

If you do get that error message, you’re stuck with using MTP mode and the authorized player. On the other hand, if you have purchased the audiobooks and they’re playing back with no problems in MSC mode…you’re welcome.
