cpu won't acknowledge my sansa unit

my sansa does not appear in the explorer window or anywhere else. How do i make it recognize the device?

Am I right in assuming you did not read the manual or search this forum?

If I am, read this.

If I am not, contact SanDisk for a warranty return.

I’m also experiencing this problem. Have never had this happen before.

Connect the Fuze and I get a Window Explorer only for the external microSDHC.  I cannot see a “drive” for SANSA FUZE as I normally do.  I have tried re-booting the machine and the Fuze and making sure that there are no other USB devices plugged into my computer.

By the way, hazza, there’s no need to be rude.  I understand your sentiment but we do make provisions here for newbies and people who are having a hard time…and also for people who may not understand how to gain access to tech info.  In fact, if someone DID do a google search, they are likely to get directed HERE.

(This sort of issue is tough to google.  What do you google or earch archives for?  “acknowledge Fuze”, “Windows Fuze”, Windows Drive letter Fuze", “No Drive Letter Fuze”, “Can’t see fuze Windows Explorer”?  )

i assume you are using the fuze in MSC mode. look in disk managment and see how the fuze is showing up. you may be running into a drive letter conflict.

Right, MSC mode.  Will check Disk Management for Drive letter conflict.

Disk Managment appears to be an adminstrator-only thing.

Unless I’m missing something.  I don’t see how to access that.

googlesearch:  MicroSoft, in it’s usual way, lists all the possible issues, and describes the possible fix.  A “hotfix” download.

However, further testing may be done on this (by Microsoft we assume) so if you “are not severely affected by this problem we recommend you wait for further update releases”.

Ie, “here’s a fix… it probably doesn’t work, so be careful.  Wait until we get off our butts and figure it out and maybe in a few months there might be a fix you can rely on…or not…”

Your right and I appologise, I let my frustration on another forum spill over to this one.

I have been using Linux so long I had completely forgotten about drive letter conflicts which COULD be the cause of these issues. Now the 20 questions part:

  1. What mode is your Fuze in? In MSC mode the Fuze just looks like a mass storage and is given a drive letter, in MTP it does not.
  2. How many drive letters do you have?
  3. What are they? C? D? E?
  4. What are devices they? DVD? USB key? Printer? (Yes some printers allow you to access SD cards and the like)
  5. Are you connected to a network?
  6. Do you have drive letters mapped?
  7. What letter do they start at?
  8. Do you have any other devices plugged into the USB at the same time?
  9. Are they also mass storage devices?
  10. Have you plugged in the Fuze and another storage device at the same time?
  11. Ever?
  12. Do you have a microSD card in the Fuze?
  13. Does it appear as a drive letter?

I remember from years ago when I worked on a help desk, the user had a voice recorder and a USB key. If they were plugged in seperatly they were assigned the drive letter E. When they plugged both in the voice recorder was assigned the letter F, that was already assigned to a netwrok drive. Being the helpful OS it is from that point on Windows remembered it had assigned the voice recorder to drive F.

It required an admin to get into the Disk manager and delete the drive while the recorder was plugged in. After that Windows went back to giving it E and the user learnt to never plug in both at the same time… aaaaah!!!.. the memories… the horror… the memories… someone pass me the valium and sit me in front of Ubuntu quickly…

Thanxz to everyone for your help and I apologize for our not being familiar with the forum and it’s use.

My 13 year old son was desperate for a solution and believes that he recycled his manuel.

Turns out the MSC mode was our issue.  It was apparently changed by accident but has now been

changed back.  Thanks again to everyone!

You will probably find it was not an accident, it was more than likely set to the default by the firmware update process … probably should be a note about it in the update instructions.

I don’t think you were rude in the least.  How does a person expect help if they don’t offer any details.  People get frustrated and without reading the forum rules and guidlines, start posting away with little information of the problem at hand and expect Sandisk or other forum members to wave a magic wand and make it all better.  I’m not trying to give the original poster a hard time… but a general observation of the forum as a whole.

When I first got my fuze, I had some serious issues at first.  I didn’t go into panic mode and start posting away here and demand immediate help.  I searched around the forum, found that my issues were discussed more than a few times in numerous threads and found answers to my problems.  Sure, I was without the services of my fuze for a day or so; but in the end the solution was within arms reach right here.
