Hi. I am able to manually sync my device via windows media player 12 (Windows 7) but the option for “Start Sync When Device Connects” is greyed-out and unavailable. I have the latest firmware and have tried both Auto Detect and MTP USB settings but neither enables this auto sync setting.
Is there something I am missing? How can I enable auto-sync via WMP?
Don’t auto sync. It is likely to produce undesired results, with either files you have on the player that you want being deleted, or many files you don’t want on the player being copied to it. If your files are unprotected, then set the usb mode on the player to MSC, and use Windows Explorer to copy and paste the songs(or folders full of songs) to your player.
I don’t recommend the Auto-Sync either, but is your device connected when you’re trying to set it up in WMP? If it’s not connected, that would probably explain the unavailable, or greyed out option.
It’s likely a WMP issue if your player is set to MTP.
Yes, it’s connected and that is when it’s greyed-out. Hmm - I appreciate your replying and have used the auto-sync feature with other MP3 players without problem by using customized auto-playlists. I actually use it to delete some files and upload newer ones to the device.
So are the reasons you both don’t recommend it WMP related or WMP & Clip+ related, i.e. something unique to the Clip’s interaction with WMP?
WMP related. The forums here are filled with posts of songs people wanted on their players mysteriously disappearing off the player, or many files they didn’t want on the player being put there by WMP. I use MSC mode for my player, then just copy and paste folders of songs to my players using Windows Explorer. No problems or surprises. It is so easy. It also makes it easy to find things on the player when I want to delete them, since the folder structure is exactly the way I want. WMP has a habit of sometimes heavily nesting songs in many layers of folders, which makes finding groups of songs to delete off the player more difficult. Heavy nesting will also reduce the maximum number of songs the player can hold, and may slow down browsing on the player.

Again, thanks for the feedback.
I think their concerns are more aimed at protecting the novice users from themselves…we see an awful lot of them here in this forum. But it sounds to me like you know what you are doing, judging from what I highlighted above. I can’t answer your initial question though…I only use WMP12 for watching videos, I am a long-time Mediamonkey Gold user when it comes to managing my players’ contents.
