I just filled up my 8GB Fuze, and upon attempting to add music to the SD wouldn’t work. I’ve tried formatting both the Fuze and the MicroSD, but neither has solved my problem.
More info is needed. How are you adding music to the card? When you go into My Computer, and select “properties” on the card, does the available space seem correct? Can you view the card’s contents with windows explorer when it’s in the player (there should be default folders)?
I’ve tried adding music to the card with both ways, and I get a permissions error both ways. I can see the full 8GB of space free on the card when in my computer. I’ve tried adding music onto the card by itself, but when I put it in the Fuze non of the songs are on the player.
Although it should work to add files to the card independently, try doing it with the card mounted in the Fuze, through the Fuze USB, and make sure you are in MSC USB mode (access this in Settings\System Settings\USB Mode).
It sounds as if the card has an issue. Try another card. 2 gB cards can be had for next to nothing.
I tried adding music through MSC mode and I get a permissions error when I do.
I really doubt it’s a problem with the card as the card is brand new, and plays the music from it fine in other devices.
What is the “Permissions Error”? A notification that pops up in Windows Explorer when you try to add data?
What happens when you try to add data through the Fuze?
Are the files you are adding mp3? Are they properly tagged?
The permissions error pops up when I try to add the music through the Fuze with the uSD already in the Fuze. I’ve tried using WMP to add the music, and I’ve tried dragging it onto the uSD. I will post a screenshot of the errors when I get home.
The file are properly tagged .mp3s as they add to the internal memory fine, just not the uSD.
And what happens if you just hook up the card to the computer directly and add files that way? (And then insert the card into the Fuze with the files already on it)
The Fuze cannot read all kinds of ID3 tags. If they are tagged ID3v1 or ID3v2.4 the Fuze may not be able to read them. You can look in Folders and see if the folders show up there. Or look in Unknown under Artists, Albums, etc. Unknowns mean tags the Fuze can’t read.
Get MP3tag.
Add it to Windows Explorer context menus while installing (check mark).
Under Tools/Options/Tags/Mpeg make the Write default ID3v2.3 ISO-8859-1.
When you’re adding an album to the Fuze, right-click on the folder, choose mp3tag to open it, and make sure the songs are in playing order top to bottom. (You might have to click the Track Number header if they are alphabetical or something else). Highlight them all, top to bottom, go to Tools, Auto-Numbering Wizard, choose Leading Zeros and run it.
This will change the tags to ID3v2.3 ISO-8859-1 and, as a bonus, give the Fuze track numbers it likes. It reads the first digit, so if you don’t have leading zeroes it will play 1, 11, 12, 2, 21, 22, etc.
Permissions may refer to DRM–Digital Rights Malarkey. It “protects” your files from being copied by YOU. Try putting the unit in MTP mode and sending them over via Windows Media Player, which sends the hidden codes that unlock them. That might end the permission problem.
They don’t want you sending files to a removable card because, heaven forbid, you might remove the card and give it to someone else.
If you copied the CDs yourself in Windows Media Player the default is to Add Copy Protection. Yes, it’s evil. Go into the Rip settings and change the format to mp3. You’ll have to re-rip the old CDs.
Except for playback, WMP is
True that! The only thing I use WMP12 for is watching videos (which it actually does very well) …I don’t use it for music or my Sansas at all!

Ihave had this problem myself with my 16gb card. never found a fix for it. I find that if I format the card, I can add music as long as my Fuze is connected for that session. Once I disconnect and reconnect, the card gives all appearances of being write protected, I get the permissions dialog box you a seem to be mentioning. It’s annoying. At this point I keep a 16 gb playlist that I update and modify, and if I really need to change items on the card, which I do not do very often, I just format, and copy the whole playlist each time.
I do not have this issue with the internal memory of the Fuze, just the external card.
