Broken Sansa Fuze

I bought a Sansa Fuze a blue 4gb. It has been only 6 months since i bought  it. Yesterday, I was doing something and  my Fuze was in my pocket. And I kind of sat on it accidently. I heard a crunch so I took it out. There was no visible crack on the screen, but when I turned it on, the screen was white and had black streaks on the screen. (Which looked like a cracked screen.) Is it possible that my warranty covers it or do I have to get the screen fixed? Can anyone help? Thanks

It’s possible you could get it replaced under warranty, but it’s equally possible that Sandisk will see the damage and decide it’s not “normal wear and tear”, thus voiding your warranty. And no, they won’t fix the screen either. It’s not cost effective. If they won’t exchange it under warranty, it would be cheaper to just buy a new one than to get it repaired.

It seems the screens crack to easily… My first one cracked (second one now, been going good for a few months) and my neighbors dog ate his. Of course there is only internal damage to the thing (once again, screen) and I see up on the forums all the time about cracked LCDs…

I see a slight design flaw. Now we just need to baby our devices.

My first one I got replaced through my best buy warranty, it was four days old when I broke it.

The reality of the thing is that If we use the players like we would any investment, with some TLC it would be fine. If we do things that we shouldnt (Like Sit on the player, or use it like a dog toy, or (And A Frined of Mine did this with his phone) play frisbee with it) the screen will break. Its a matter of common sense in most cases. I have seen some where the screen just broke, for no reason, those are what we lovingly call lemons. Good luck with your players.

CB is right.  If you treat your devices properly, they will treat you properly.  If this helps, imagine your player isn’t a player but a thick $50 or $100 dollar bill.  As the devices we use in our normal daily lives get smaller, the more care it takes to make sure accidents don’t happen to them.

I don’t consider anything about the construction of the fuze to be a design flaw.  It is a well designed and thought out media device.  I personally wouldn’t want to pay a premium to make sure the fuze is “dog proof” or “sitting-on proof”…

Maybe I’m extra cautious with my gear, but my current fuzes are the latest in a long line of DMP’s and other audio gear I’ve had.  I don’t think I’ve ever accidently damaged any of my equipment.  I’m not saying it isn’t possible or shouldn’t happen… the message is it is easier to prevent accidents than dealing with them after the damage has occurred…

I agree…I’m entering my 6th month of Fuze ownership, and it’s still in great shape. It was my first mp3 player, and perhaps I baby it more than the Clip, but between the Fuze and the memory card, that’s $100 I’m not willing to just throw away.

Yep, I go along with everything said here!  I got a silicon skin for both my wife’s and mine first adding a screen protector…  Helps with the little bumps and knocks of normal life and also helps a lot when you leave it on a table and get up with your earphones on, it helps it stick enough so you have time to stop before it goes cash…  I have used my fuze while stacking cord wood. With the silicon case it stays put in a upper shirt pocket very well… That said i find that in a pocket of any kind is bad for the fuze… Your pocket collects lint dust balls and even dirt that can work it’s way into the function wheel…  I now use a belt clip or arm band…  But back to the issue…  Be really nice tell them the story and you may get it replaced… Best of luck and do let us know how you make out!!  George

I have stood up with my Sansa not in my hand and I’m glad for that really tight earphone jack and isolation earbuds(to stay in my head). I wonder if that’s why it’s so tight… Anyway, I bought my first Sansa Fuze from Amazon.com and it turned out to be a lemon. I returned it within 30 days an got a second one free(as long as I returned the other one). No one ever figured out whatever happened. Oh, well. My other one has had a few odd glitches, but nothing serious.

I called the tech support and they told me to send pictures of the screen on and off. I’m waiting for their reply.

they said that they are going to send me a replacement one.

I’m so happy!!

Thank you all for help.

Boy, you dodged a BIG bullet there! Who’da thunk it?

I’m going to have to start saying theat SanDisk stands behind their products 110% now.

It’s not a design flaw.  Any and every handheld device with an LCD screen is going to be subject to cracking if you sit on it and too much pressure gets concentrated on the screen itself.  It’s the nature of LCD.  LCD ain’t kevlar.

Think about getting the plastic hard case for your fuze.  From the reviews that I read it’ll fit the fuze perfectly with the only downside being that it’s difficult to take off and it’ll make using the power switch more difficult to use.  Not unlike the silicone case which I use.

For the cost of about $6, the next time you hear a crunch, it may be the hard case and not your fuze

Or better yet, don’t stick it in your back pocket to begin with. Get a case with a belt clip or arm band for it.

They should make a better, more sturdy belt clip that’ll easily attach to the silicone case.  But I agree, better not to sit on your fuze.

That would be like, common sense! :smileyvery-happy:

No offense offended to anyone, either

That one is something your gonna have to take up with the company who makes that cover. I agree that it looks and feels weak, but if you use it normally with some care, it should be fine. Works great for me.
