I have a new 8GB Sansa Clip that was unrecognized by my Win XP PC. I plugged it into a different Win XP PC and it was recognized, and at that time I updated the firmware to version .35. It still was unrecognized by my PC until I set the USB mode to MSC (autodetect and MTP modes didn’t work). I copied several mp3 audiobook files into the Audiobooks folder on the clip. When I disconnect the Clip it says it’s refreshing my media, but when I turn it on it doesn’t find the audiobooks folder.
I also note that when hooked to the PC, the folder structure appears (folders for Audible, Audiobooks, Music, Podcasts, and Record) but except for the files I’ve copied into the Audiobooks folder, all other folders are empty. The Clip has some demo music files on it that came pre-installed which it will play but I don’t see them in the directory as viewed from the PC. On the Clip itself the choices from the home screen are Music, FM Radio, Voice, and Settings (no audiobooks).
I’m pretty sure I’m missing something very simple. Anybody know what that might be?
The sample music was transferred in MTP mode, so it won’t show up in the player on your pc when you connect in MSC mode. Since you can’t connect in MTP mode, to get rid of the sample songs, you would need to format the player, deleting all the files on it.
The Audibook menu on the player is within the music menu.
The original Clip does not read (or display) folders. It uses the ID3 tags of the files to display the Artist, Album , Track, etc. info.
The demo, or sample music loaded on the player at the factory is added in MTP mode. Your computer cannot see that in MSC. It has to be in the same mode in order to see the files.
MTP mode (or the dreaded Auto Defect) needs Windows Media Player 10 or above for the drivers necessary to “manage” the player. Do you have this?
>The Audibook menu on the player is within the music menu. (JK98)
>Audiobooks is under Music on the player’s menus. (Tapeworm)
That would be the simple thing I was missing…doh! I hadn’t scrolled through the menus under Music far enough to find Audiobooks, and the files I had in there play just like they should.

I believe I do have WMP 10, but I was just using Windows Explorer to move files. I’ll try Media Player, too.
Thanks again to both of you for helping me out of the ditch.
You don’t have to use WMP (or MTP mode) to transfer any of your files unless they are DRM-crippled. Windows Explorer and MSC mode are the easiest and most trouble-free method of doing it.
Now my next challenge is getting my .aax files to play on the Clip ,
AAX is an enhanced Audible file that can also contain images and links. These type of files cannot be read by your Clip, however if they are of the regular Audilbe audio format (.aa) they can if you use Audible’s Manager software and have the player set to MTP mode as these are DRM-encrypted.
But then you’ll be back to the same problem you came here with; the player not being recognized in MTP mode. My suggestion would be to find some converter software that would convert those files to .mp3 format.
