Windows 7 Explorer not recognizing External WD 2 TB drive

This is a Western Digital 2 TB External drive, When I connect it to the USB port, I hear the computer’s recognition signal, although the drive is NOT recognized by Windows Explorer. The drive is also NOT shown in Administrative Tools where it can be formatted. The drive IS shown in Device Manage where I hav both checked the driver and Windows reports it’s up to date, and I have completely disabled the driver, restarted the computer and it is still not recognized by Windows Explorer. I would appreciate suggestions to remedy this.

Hello,

I recommend you try some basic troubleshooting:

1- If it is a desktop drive connect the power adapter to the wall directly.

2- If the computer is a desktop, connect it on the back USB port (directly to the PC, not through a hub).

3- Make sure you hear the connection sound windows makes when recognizes a USB device.

4- If possible try another USB cable and/or another computer

5- Go to "Disk Management” to verify if the drive shows up there.

If the drive shows up in disk management but it is not seen on Computer, then it means the partition is corrupted and you will have to format it in order to use it again. Please note that formatting the drive will delete all data stored on it.

If the drive is not seen on disk management then it means the drive is defective and needs to be replaced.
