Windows won’t update as it says I need to update the firmware on my WD BLUE SN580 2TB.
I have downloaded San Disk Dashboard to to do this. The dashboard will not run, it launches to the task bar but will not open.
I have tried the commands referred to elsewhere to resolve this issue with the dashboard - e.g. around GPU, and Sandbox commands in the shortcut. It makes no difference.
I disabled my antivirus it made no difference.
If I boot into Safemode with Networking - the dashboard will load. However I don’t actually have networking, as the Lan driver doesn’t work in safe mode, so no internet access to do the firmware update.
Any suggestions? It shouldn’t be this hard to get a standard Windows Update.
Your WD Blue SN580 needs a firmware update, but the SanDisk Dashboard won’t open in normal mode. It works in Safe Mode, but without internet access, you can’t complete the update there. First, make sure you have the latest version of SanDisk Dashboard from Western Digital’s website. If that doesn’t help, try a clean boot by disabling all non-Microsoft services and startup programs using the System Configuration tool (msconfig), then restart and try running the Dashboard again. If it still doesn’t work, try using the WD Dashboard instead—it may support your drive and work better. You can also check WD’s support site for a manual firmware update file. In Device Manager, look for any issues with the drive or drivers. If Windows Update is blocked because of this, you can manually install updates from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
Hey @WD116 just checking—have you already tried the steps @JohnJacob mentioned?
Downloaded the latest SanDisk Dashboard from WD’s website
Tried a clean boot using msconfig (disabling all non-Microsoft services)
Tried using WD Dashboard instead of SanDisk Dashboard
Checked Device Manager for any issues with the drive or drivers
Tried Safe Mode, but couldn’t proceed due to no internet
If you’ve already done all that and the issue’s still there, here’s something you can try:
Head to the Sandisk website link given by @SBrown and look for the SN580 firmware update related to Windows 11 24H2. Download the firmware file manually. Transfer it to a USB drive.
Save it to a USB or any other external drive. Then boot into Safe Mode (without networking), open the SanDisk Dashboard, and use the manual firmware update option to load the file from your USB. This way, you don’t need internet in Safe Mode.
Let me know if this works or if you run into anything else.
Thank you all for the help. I tried @johnjacobb40 method but it didn’t work.
@helly I took the risk of the manual firmware update in safe mode. When loading the dashboard says it couldn’t load probably due to no internet access, but the manual firmware update appears to have worked fine.
