Unlock Drive is empty, whole disk is encrypted and cannot be accessed

Good day! I have posted this to WD support but I also need advice on users who have encountered my issue.

I have been using this 1TB My Passport for almost a year. Yesterday after I rebooted my laptop the drive cannot be accessed anymore. The 931.48GB user data is encrypted but the 30 MB Unlock Drive is now empty (RAW data is shown in Device Manager).

I experience this issue last August and by reinstalling the SES Driver somehow fixed it. Now I have reinstalled the SES Driver and it does not solve the issue. I tried it in two more laptops and it does not work. Can you help me find a solution?

This disk is a backup of my family photos and office documents and I need to recover them. Is it possible if I burn the WDSmartWare_PP4R2_1_4_1_2 into the 30 MB virtual drive, will this solve my issue? Can I run Unlock and decrypt my data?

Note: I have tried the solutions I can find on Knowledge Base and on Internet. None helped solve my problem.

Thanks in advance,

Josh

Hello,

Have you tried on a desktop computer? and also if possible try replacing the USB cable.

Hi Hamlet,

I have three laptops but no desktop. One is running on Win7 32, Win7 64 and Windows Server 2012 R2. I tried replacing the cable but does not solve the issue.

I have a 500GB My Passport Essential which is almost four years old and works fine in all three computers.

This 1TB My Passport is exactly a year today and it goes bonkers last Saturday. I took the whole Sunday trying to figure how to get it back online but all solutions that I find on the internet did not work.

Right now it takes some minutes for the data partition to show in the Disk Management and another few hours for the virtual drive to show. The virtual drive shows RAW. On my good drive it should show WD Unlocker (UTF).

I believe my data is still intact. It just can’t be accessed because it is encrypted. I only need to have the virtual drive contain the Unlock.exe so I can decrypt and access my data.

Does anyone tried burning a new Unlock Image to the virtual drive and succesfully decrypted the drive? I have the image but I am not sure if that will work.

I really need some expert advice as I am already running out of ideas.

My last resort is to go to a data recovery company but the price they quoted me is enough to by six 2TB My Passports!!!

I appreciate any suggestions you can give. I am beginning to feel desperate.

Thanks in advance,

Josh
