Size difference - 2gb versus 4gb?

I’m debating between buying the 2gb or 4gb sansa clip. I have not been able to find the dimensions of the products - is the 4gb player the same size as the 2gb one? By the way, Amazon is selling the 2gb one for $40 and buy.com is selling the 4gb one for $50.

Silly me…I just started the Buy.com thread, and then read your post!  I’d seriously recommend the 4gb unit.  One consideration is the price history:

Note the blue line is the minimum price…I don’t think I ever seen the 4gb under $60.

The devices are the same dimensions, just a difference in memory capacity.

The tradeoffs:  the 4GB has a reflective coating on the display.  Though it looks cool, many have complained of readability of the display in bright light.  The latest firmware addresses this by kicking up the display brightness a wee bit.

Having an additional 2GB of memory is a happy thing, as Sansas get filled up with music, audiobooks, and podcasts.

I am still most impressed by the 2GB models, the available colors, and the easily read display.

Maybe Sansa is closing out the current 4GB model and preparing to release a new version with a readable screen. The 4GB Clip now only comes in one style and unless it is night time - or you are in a very dark room - you can’t see the screen through its mirrored finish. (There’s plenty of threads on this forum discussing this complaint.) Hopefully Sansa will come out with 4GB versions of their other colors as those screens are incredibly clear.

I should also note that I’ve had consistently good experiences with buy.com (AOI printer/scanner, Clip, video card, etc.), but some don’t like their brisk return policy on undamaged items (14 days).  But the last go-round (about a month ago) they dropped the 4gb to $64 (I bit) and since they are an Amazon Marketplace merchant, Amazon matched the price (also with free shipping) within about a day (it was actually funny to watch all the lemming merchants follow along with “lower” prices but higher totals with shipping included).  Anyway, if Amazon follows at the $50 price point they have a more generous return policy.

Bob, btw:  interesting point you raise. I guess for another 2gb, no shiny screen or lack of color choices would hold me back.  Call me frugal.

Hmmmm…I haven’t read the thread devoted to screen reflection problems, but I have mild problems outside and zero problems in normal indoor lighting.

Anyway, I agree something is afoot.  I knew when I bit at $60-something that some kind of clearance was happening (don’t EVER ask me for a stock tip!).

Buy.com has Atomic fast shipping.  I click, and turn around to meet the delivery at the door.  Perhaps, they employ wormholes from the warehouse to my door.  Great service.

I hope that the design team has opted for practicality over vanity.  The coating was a bit extreme.  Do you really mind seeing the border if the display?  Alas, such glitches will happen in production runs versus prototype.

I’d love to take the current silver 4GB and mount it in the classic klavierlack black 2GB case.  At its heart, regardless of cosmetics, we have a wonderful device, built like a tank.

Hmmmm…I haven’t read the thread devoted to screen reflection problems…

There’s several threads with posts discussing the dim screen problems on the 4GB Clip. Here’s just one with ten pages devoted to it: LINK

I think people overreacts to the screen problem…

It is a little hard to see under direct noon-sunlight but Its also hard to see an Ipod screen, my Archos AV500 4" screen, a laptop screen… so…

The clip screen is readable under sunlight… (hard, but readable)… and indoors is perfect… (in the car, at a house, just under any shadows is perfectly design)

I strongly recommend to buy the 4Gb version if its only a 10 $ of price difference…

If you wait for the new ones then get the newest… as for the current models… the 4Gb is awsome…

I with BUC on this.

And get the 4GB if at all possible, for at the very least, the maximum amount of space.  That’s part of the reason I got mine.  And if you can find it for $49.99 at Buy.com, go now!  I spent ten more bucks for mine, and that was with a Google Checkout discount.

All the best,

Brad

It does look cool, and it’s the same as the Express screen.  I just prefer simplicity.

I grew up on Nixie tubes.

Coming from use of the 1 or 2GB device, I can see how some users would be upset at the display difference, but it’s a matter of acclaimation I guess.

I’d like to have a 4GB Clip- but I’m waiting to see if something better than the current 4GB comes out. That reflective coating is a HUGE turn-off (The non-reflective 2GB screen is virtually oimpossible to see in bright sun…I don’t even want to think about the 4GB! ) and I don’t care for it’s silver color, either.

I do hope that if Sansa comes out with a new version of the 4GB, that they come up with some better color choices this time- instead of their usual garish array! How about some green? or metalic gold/pewter??? Or a NICE non-garish blue?

Sheesh! I love my Clip, and would never get an iPod…but when I see people walking around with some of those pretty iPods…

How does the old saying go, “beauty is only skin deep?”

Inside the Clip is a heart of gold, that does reproduce music far better than the pretty one.
