sansa m240

I have 2 M240’s. One belongs to my wife and the other is mine, but my trouble is a little different. We have had ours for over a year and have lots of music on them. After saying all that here is my problem: When we first got them we could drag and drop all we wanted, then it seemed we had to copy and paste the mp3’s that we wanted on the M240, now it will not let me drag and drop or copy and paste anything to it. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance!!!

Try the procedure below.  It should fix things for you.  Let me know if it works.

Formatting the SanDisk Sansa m200 Series

SanDisk tech support recommends formatting the m200 series in both MSC and MTP modes to completely clear out all work areas,“fragments” and residual data. The m200 has a very basic Operating System that doesn’t have a defrag option. According to tech support, the m200 needs formmating occasionally to keep it working smoothly. I learned that formatting will clear up intermittent hang-ups.

If you have music files on your m200 and want to back them up to your PC, see the index item Copying Songs from the SanDisk Sansa m200 Series to your PC.

Format in MSC Mode

  1. With the m200 not connected to the PC, power it on, press the menu key. Select " Settings", then USB , then MSC.
  2. Connect the m200 to the PC via the USB cable.
  3. Right click on the " Start" button.
  4. Left click on " Explore"
  5. Find the m200. It will show as a hard drive, for example: “SANSA M250(E:)”
  6. Right click on the m200 device and select " Format"
  7. After formatting is complete, click on the “Safely Remove Hardware” icon on the System Tray and stop the device.
  8. Disconnect the m200 from the PC.

Format in MTP Mode

  1. With the m200 not connected to the PC, power it on, press the menu key. Select " Settings", then USB , then Auto Detect.
  2. Connect the m200 to the PC via the USB cable.
  3. Right click on the " Start" button.
  4. Left click on " Explore"
  5. Find the m200. This time it will not show as a hard drive but as a music device, for example: “SanDisk Sansa m250” Note there is no drive letter in MTP mode.
  6. Right click on the m200 device and select " Format"
  7. After formatting is complete, disconnect the m200 from the PC. There is no icon to stop the device.

Your m200 device is now formatted and ready to reload.

I have a similar problem to Skillz that I have posted elsewhere in these forums.  As an e-series owner I am very disapointed that there are so many problems with this newer model.  I though SD should be moving forward, not screwing up the future!  Here’s the post:

After being a proud owner of 2 e140’s and 1 e130 (512 MB version) I am very sad to say that the m240 refurbished model I got from buy.com for $12 for my sister-in-law has been an utter dissapointment.  Since day 1 it has not functioned, it never actually “turned on” as I began loading it with tunes for her before even turning it on.  About 800 megs into the 1gig capacity, it gave an error “file path too deep.'”  After disconnecting the player from the XP computer, it simply would not turn on, no taking-the-battery-out trick and holding-the-menu button for 1 min, 2 min, etc. helped at all.  When initally connected the device showed up in my computer as an audio device… now, when connected, it shows up as 2 separate flash drives, E & F, and F of just gives an error message “please insert disc”.  It apprears kind of like my older e models but they actually have removable SD card storage so there’s a reason for them to be recognized as 2-drive devices.  The m240 is unconceivable why it would do that… whatever.  Anyway, when Vista tries to format E, it has an unknown capacity and gives errors.  XP (on 2 different computers) hangs, and hangs, and won’t format the disk no matter what.  Even through Computer Disk Mgt. which was suggested by Sandisk tech support.  All in all I am very disapointed and have to go through buy.com’s hokey return policy now for a refurbished unit that should have worked “like new” out of the box.  I am always considered myself to be a faithful Sandisk customer and truly love my e model players but I made a big mistake trying to purchase this M model on the cheap for my sis.  She’s super bummed and I look like an ■■■■■… thanks Sandisk.  You really know how to fork up an otherwise good thing.

Please stop re-posting the same thing. You’ve responded to 3 threads with the same response

TimR58,

There seems to be a limit on how many files can be in one folder.  One idea is to open it in MSC mode, delete one file, then add a new folder.  I tried that and could add many songs to the new folder.

Good luck!

davidsmartin,

One thing I have found is a limit on folders/files.  I ran up against an approximately 256 limit on an m250, but found that I could get around it by the following procedure.

With the device connected start WMP. Click on " Tools", " Options", " Devices". Highlight the Sansa device you have connected (m250, etc.) then click on " Properties". Uncheck " Create folder hierarchy on device".   I was using WMP 10 and MTP mode, but it removed the limit for me.

I have the M250 but I recently started having the same problem, not being able to copy files to it.

What I found was that if I tried to add a file to a folder that already existed I could not do it. But, if I copied that folder onto my pc and deleted it from the Sansa, then made the changes I wanted, I could then copy it back to the Sansa with no problem.

It seems like you can’t have more files than were originally in the folder when you copied it to the player. I’ve found that if I delete one file from a folder, then I can copy a file to that folder.

There may be more going on than this, but this has worked for me so far.

Reformating would probably be good, but try just copying the entire contents of the Sansa music files to a folder on your pc and then delete everything off the Sansa and then copy back what you want on it.

It seems not to be a problem to copy new folders onto it.
