Sansa Clip 2gb Not Recognized At All!

I’ve never had problems with my sansa clip 2gb until recently when it will no longer be recognized at all by my computer when i plug it in. I’ve tried the firmware updater, however I can’t use it because my mp3 player isn’t even recognized by the computer. I have the correct windows and and also windows media player. Like I said, I’ve never had problems before. I’m running out of options, and I’d like to know exactly what formatting would do because I dont want to delete all my songs if it’s not necessary. Thank you for your help because I’m in desperate need of it!
