Sansa Clip 16GB?

Anyone knows if Sansa plans to launch  16 GB of the Clip player?

I was reading a 2007 article which stated that they may soon.

It hasn’t been announced. Unconfirmed reports says the Clip has been discontinued, actually.

It’s still listed on my Internets – here on the Sandisk site and here at the Sansa Store. 

Interestingly, although listed as “Backorder” on the Store site, it appears they will allow you to place an order for the 8gb Clip ($99). I didn’t process it all the way through, but click the “Backorder” tab and it will place an 8gb Clip in a ‘cart’ for ordering.

This is half-way through 2009! I don’t know about you, but I sure wouldn’t classify 2 years + as “soon”.

The $49 8g clip may have been a once-off event that coincided with a temporary free fall in the price of flash memory. I mean the factory price, not the retail price. I think it bottomed in December, and has since more than doubled. Success of iphone, etc keeps bidding prices higher, so Sansa probably can’t offer 8 or 16 at very attractive prices. Without them making profits, it makes sense to cut back on firmware maintenance. Or maybe they are cooking up an answer to Archos 2, which gives an expandable 8g for around $50 (worse firmware?).

Sweet yes; it might almost convince me to buy one.

The small town I’m from,  Walmart still has a few of these red tagged $49 Sansa Clip 8 GB  models on the shelf.  They are lost in the sea of mp3 players and still one of the best players on the shelf.

I have 2 for my personal use…   Used all the time.  (one at a time) :slight_smile:

In  several years after these die,  I will look on the market for replacements.   I will look at Sansa’s product line first.
