Need advice on 8GB Clip

Hey guys, I’ve been in the market for a new mp3 player for a while, and sound quality is pretty important to me as well as battery life so the Clip seems to be the way to go.

Unfortunately, from what I’ve read on here, the 8GB version seems to be plagued with problems much more than the 1, 2, and 4GB versions?

Something that tipped me off to not buy it yet was when I went to my local Walmart, they had the 4GB player for I think between 45 and 50 dollars.  But the 8GB was selling for 70 dollars.  So that got me thinking…

I wrote down the UPC code on the box if it would be of any help.  SDMX11R-8192K-A70W

So what should I do?  I mean a 8GB Clip for 70 seems like a fantastic deal, but if there is some flaw with the 8GB version Clips I’d rather not waste my money on buying a inherently defective product as being a law student means I do not have much discretionary spending money available so every purchase has to be one that will last.  Thank you for your assistance.

Cheers Warrior1986

I’ve had an 8GB for over a month and it works perfect.   I’m not sure if I’m lucky or what :P     I have bough several Clips as presents and have yet to have any problems with them (other than a issue with the clip’s spring - doesn’t effect the playing of the player, just the clip part).       They all have had great sound , simple to use, and solid user interface.  I have also owned a Fuze, and it was just too big for my needs (although a great mp3 player too).

I have a post on here about the battery life and it is EXCELLENT :)  http://forums.sandisk.com/sansa/board/message?board.id=clip&thread.id=14326    up to 20 hours with mp3 128k vbr format.

I would not worry about the 8GB.   I’m not sure if your from the states, but walmarts price is hard to beat and they have a return policy in case it is defective.  but I highly doubt you will have issues.

Cheers,

I’ve bought three 2GB clips, one 4GB and two 8GB.  None of them have ever had a problem.  Obviously I do have a shopping problem but that’s not sandisk’s fault

I have a 2GB and I want to buy an 8GB, but I’ll probably just get a 4GB. (nothing wrong with buying toys!)

Someone mentioned that they couldn’t get more than around 2,000 songs to show up on their 8 gig Clip even though there was space available on it. I don’t know if they were doing something wrong, or if there is around a 2,000 song limit for the Clip. Even if there is such a limit, it would probably only significantly affect those using 128 kbps or lower bitrate, and having songs averaging under 4 minutes in length. A bit of math. A gig of space can hold approximately 18 hours of music at 128 kbps. If songs average 4 minutes each, that would mean approximately 270 songs fitting in a gig, or approx. 2160 songs fitting in 8 gigs.

Even so, if there is a 2,000 song limit(anyone here manage to fit significantly more than 2,000 songs on an 8 gig Clip?), it might be enlarged in a future firmware update. I guess when the Clip was first released, there was no intention for 8 gig or higher capacity models. The Fuze has a 4,000 song limit, however that will be expanded to 8,000 songs with the next firmware update.

I have both a Clip and a Fuze. The Clip is nice for its small size and clip, but for navigating through 8 gigs of files, the Fuze might be easier, especially if you like to hunt for individual songs rather than letting albums or playlists play through. My Clip is just 4 gigs. My Fuze is also 4 gigs, however I have a card in it adding to the storage. the Clip is listed as having 15 hour battery life, but in real world usage some say they get around 12 hours or so of run time. Figure around 19 hours or so of run time for typical use on the Fuze. The stated battery life figures for an mp3 player are like the mpg ratings for a car. They reflect results under the best case scenario. Real world usage results will be less than stated numbers.

Why would it be any more difficult to get to a song with the Clip? You can hold the button down to turbo-scroll, as opposed to turning the Fuze’s wheel. But the list of songs is still a list of songs. Or, you could narrow your song search by going through the artist pathway

You think you have a problem…look at my signature.  Most of those players were bought within the last 8-9 months.  I’m anxiously awaiting the release of SlotRadio.  I’m thinking about a Zune 16.  Don’t get me started on earphones.  I have a problem! :smileyvery-happy:

That is just my opinion of the two. Perhaps you may experience navigating to individual songs as easy on the Clip as on the Fuze, however I find it easier on the Fuze. Let’s see what others say. I often just let albums play through anyway, especially when I am walking around, rather than hunting for songs. When I am sitting down, I might occasionally search for a specific song. The Fuze displays 6 list items at a time, while there is just 3 displayed for the Fuze. The scroll wheel on the Fuze does seem to make navigation much easier than the buttons on the Clip. Since your Clip is just 2 gigs, and your Fuze has 12 gigs of storage, it isn’t really a fair comparison. I am taking about a Clip vs a Fuze when both have around the same number of items stored.

Yes, the storage difference in my players is definitely a fair point to make, and I don’t very often search for a single song either. But I never scroll through the song list…I always shorten it by going Artist, album, then the song. I will also be curious to hear others’ opinions.

I wouldn’t call it a problem unless you really can’t afford it. If you can afford it, call it a hobby instead. Do you use all those players? I went for over two years without buying any players or headphones, then bought a Fuze, a Clip, and a Slotmusic player within the past 6 months. Do you want the Slotradio player, or just the cards? The Slotradio cards interests me, but the player does not. I hope Sandisk also comes out with 500 song Slotradio cards for under $20. Imo 500 song cards for under $20 would probably bring in more revenue than 1,000 song cards for under $40. I hope Sandisk comes out with some AA or AAA battery based players with a card slot and a display.

Confused yet?    The 8GB Clip works !  :P   Buy one if thats what your looking at,  you won’t regret it.   It’s one of the best small portable mp3 players you can get.   I have purchased a dozen clips as gifts, and no one has had problems with the ones I bought.    This being a support site, you will see some posts of people who have problems.     But I don’t see an abnormal frequency for the 8GB model, or the clip for that matter.  It is an excellent product.

For the last 1.5 years I have been happy with my Clip’s.   Best little electronic gadget I have and also one of the most used devices I own,  next to the cellphone.

Cheers,

What I would love to see…is a hybrid of Clip and Fuze. Battery life of the Fuze, form factor of the Clip. No video worries, Clip-type display, microsdhc slot, clip on the back…if you kept the display small like the Clip’s, you could fit a bigger Fuze type battery pack and perhaps build a player halfway between the 2 in size…anybody with me? :smileyvery-happy:

Oh, it’s a hobby, I was just being facetious.  If I can’t afford something, I wait until I can.  I cashed out some vacation time at the end of last year, so the Zune was a Christmas present to myself.  I’ve looked at a Zune 16, but I think I’ll stick with the Fuze 4GB+16GB card.

I use the Clip, the Fuze and the Zune mostly.  The Nitrus is dying (sniff), and I outgrew the DAP 256, C150 and ZVM.  The Shaker and SlotMusic players were mostly for the novelty, as will the SlotRadio be.  The Express (with a card) was intended to replace the C150, and ended up being replaced by the Clip.

IMHO, Sandisk needs to advertise slotMusic and slotRadio more to reach their target demographic.  Lower-priced, lower-quantity cards for SR would be an good alternative as well.

I have the 2 gig clip and I like it. The display is nice and bright and it rocks!  It has stopped playing on me twice though which kinda stinks since one time I was under a motorcycle pulling off its exhaust in the garage.  Everytime I would go over to it and activate the display it would be on pause.  Puzzling.

I still would like something with a larger capacity so instead of getting the 8 gig version of the clip, I opted to get the 4 gig clone from a chinese vender for $26.  google lightinthebox.  Well see how it goes.

Thanks guys.  I think I’ll pick up it up then.  It just seems like the biggest problems I’ve read about is battery life (apparently that’s an acknowledged problem?) and random stuff like it freezing up in play mode or issues with connectivity and such.  Also, apparently the FM radio inside of it is bad?  This is sort of important as in my gym they have broadcasters setup for the TVs that broadcast the sound on the FM radio band and there are times I’d like to hear be able to watch and hear what’s going on.

Next question, as it’s really important to me.  How do I know I’m buying a brand new one, and not a refurbished one?  I would presume that Walmart is only allowed to sell new ones, but then again, I don’t know how the refurb system works and if they just get put out in the same boxes or whatnot.  I guess the price makes me suspicious.

Battery playtime is excellent.  See my Battery vs bitrate tests here: http://forums.sandisk.com/sansa/board/message?board.id=clip&thread.id=14326  most tests between 12 to 20 hours for a unit so small is Amazing.

Battery life according to SansaFix (one of the few Sansa Employees who post here):  http://forums.sandisk.com/sansa/board/message?board.id=clip&message.id=758&query.id=197415#M758

Walmart, BestBuy, Amazon all USA retailers will have retail factory fresh clips in unopened boxes.    I haven’t seen a place that sells refurbished  units.   If they do, I’m sure they are required to say and will have some kind of sticker on the box.  (just my guess).

I have yet to have any problem with any clip I have purchased, and I have purchased about 12 over the last year and a half.    Buy with confidence,   You are buying a quality product from Sandisk/Sansa the leader in the flash memory market. FM radio has always worked.   Sound quality is the best on the market.

You will love the Clip, and its perfect for working out.  If you goto Walmart,  they usually have the 8gb clips hiding in a locked case.   Sometimes you have to search around for them.

After you have yours for a few days please post back and tell us how well you like it !

I was only listing my clips.  If I list the rest even you would think me crazy.

Do you still have all these players? If so, do you still use all of them? Have you thought about giving away the 2 gig players? I could understand having 2 or 3 Clips. A friend even suggested the idea of carrying more than one Clip at a time to have more songs available, and to have more play time.

I got my 8gb Sansa Clip as a gift about a month ago. When it works it’s great, but its not reliable sometimes not charging and sometimes not turning on at all. Specifically,  it charged very slowly and not fully within a 24 hour period using usb ports on both my desktop and laptop computers, and sometimes did not charge at all.  So I bought an AC 110V adapter charger. This at first seemed to charge it faster, but again never fully. 2) Then two days ago it wouldn’t turn on (light up) at all, although when I turned it off the previous day it read about 1/2 charged.  I tried charging it yesterday, but it didn’t light up, nor did it charge.  It now seemed fully dead.  This morning I plugged in the AC charger, switched it on and it did light up and began playing where I left off three or four days ago.  Do you think that this is a battery problem or something else?  I think that it was purchased at a Walmart store, but not in my area.  What can I do?  Help!

Take it back to Walmart with the receipt (if you can get it).    Tell them you have had issues with it , and they have progressively gotten worse.    Tell them you have worked with Sansa Support.     Tell them you want to exchange it for another one.     I don’t know exactly what Walmart’s return policy is,  I have gotten them to return items that were beyond their policy (earphones etc).   I’ve done this at BestBuy too.     Always is better to be nice and sweet talk them.

If the product doesn’t work, take it back right away.

If you can’t take it back this way.  then…     I have heard of people buying another unit… Swapping the defects for the new one…   then returning it the next day saying it doesn’t work…    People now a days…    gosh…     LOL     Disclaimer:   I have never done this ^.^;

Read their policy,  if they can’t help you, then use your warranty through Sansa Support
