SanDisk 3.2Gen1 - suddenly "insert disk into USB" "unallocated space" "error CRC"

SanDisk 3.2Gen 1 (128 gb) bought 25 Nov 2025 with daily use since then.
When connected to desktop initially normal connection and after a few minutes automatically disconnected showing “Please insert disc into USB”.
Have tried to connect to multiple PCs and laptops showing the same problem.
Disk management shows the disk unallocated space but cannot put volume or format it showing “virtual disk manager data error cyclic redundancy check”

Have tried CMD>diskpart. Cannot perform clean due to error cyclic redundancy check.
Needless to say that chkdsk does not perform.

Have tried testdisk and other software but they cannot find any lost partition or recover any files.
Is it a lost cause?

Try these.

A Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) error typically occurs when a storage device, such as a hard drive or USB flash drive, has damaged or unreadable sectors. If you want, switch USB ports or cables and see if your computer can read it. It’s recommended to use other data recovery software to retrieve your files from the USB flash drive.
Once your data is successfully recovered, run CHKDSK (Check Disk) again to check for and fix logical file system errors. However, it cannot repair the physical damage to the USB flash drive.

Many thanks for your reply.
As noted in the initial post, I have tried to connect to multiple PCs and laptops (tried many different USB ports both with the USB-A and USB-C option of the SanDisk 3.2Gen1) showing the same problem. Disk management shows the disk unallocated space but cannot put volume or format it showing “virtual disk manager data error cyclic redundancy check”.
Data cannot be retrieved despite efforts with multiple data recovery software (testdisk, EaseUS etc).
CHKDSK cannot read to run.
Have also tried CMD>diskpart. Cannot perform clean due to error cyclic redundancy check.
Any other thoughts?

This suggests a hardware failure rather than simple file corruption. A cyclic redundancy check error usually means the drive’s controller can’t read its own memory reliably anymore. When built-in tools and recovery software all fail to access the disk, there’s nothing left that software can fix.

For normal at-home recovery, it’s basically a dead drive. The only theoretical option is a professional chip-level recovery lab, and that’s often very expensive.

The next step is to file a warranty claim with SanDisk. You’ll probably lose the data, but you should still be eligible for a replacement unit.
