Question about playlists

Is Windows Media Player the only way to make playlists? I drag and drop all my files onto the device to transfer media. I was wondering if there’s a way to create a playlist folder on the Sansa and make my playlist from the device itself. Kind of like the GO list.

If I end up having to use WMP, it doesn’t make repeat copies of the songs already on my device, does it? I’d hate to fill up my memory space with multiple copies of the same file.

Sorry if the question is noob-like, I just got this and it’s my first MP3 player.

No, unfortunately there isn’t.

With the e200 series you used to be able to save the Go List.plp file and rename it to a *.pla file

so you could build playlists one at a time but you would still need to go through the hassle of saving each

new Go List and renaming the files.

It is no longer possible to save the Go List.

Additionally, it used to be “Go List” when it was a *.plp file and now it is “GoList” and it isn’t possible to save it.

You can’t actually create a playlist using the Fuze’s UI (other than the Go list).  But you can manually create a playlist from your computer using files already on the Fuze.  You don’t have to get into syncronizing or anything.

Your playlist options depend on the USB connection mode.  If you use MTP (required for DRM support), then WMP is probably the best option.   If you use MSC mode, then you have far more options for creating playlists.  Using Winamp for example, you could drag files from your Fuze into Winamp’s playlist editor, arrange them as desired, then save the playlist back to the Fuze (I reccomend saving the playlists to the MUSIC folder on the Fuze).

In either case, no duplicate files are created.  The playlists are just a list of pointers to the music files already on the Fuze and don’t contain the actual music files themselves.

Windows Media Player isn’t the only game in town. But SkinJob is right in that you can’t do it from your player (only the GoList). He also eluded to using Winamp media player. Here are some specific instructions on one way to use Winamp & MSC mode to create .m3u format playlists. These .m3u playlists have no song limit, but .pla format playlists have a 500 song limit, and the GoList is limited to 50 songs.

You do have to remember though, that if you have an SD card inserted, you cannot combine music from both the card and the internal memory into one single (.m3u) playlist. Sometimes this means re-shuffling your music to get it where it needs to be so you can include it in a particular playlist. Sort of a PITA at times!

Just to clarify, you _ HAVE _ to store an .m3u format playlist in the MUSIC folder along with the music, NOT the PLAYLIST folder! They will not work if they aren’t in the MUSIC folder. They will come up as < EMPTY > ! Only .pla format playlists will work in the PLAYLIST folder.

Actually, they don’t have to be in the MUSIC folder, but the do have to somewhere within the same branch as the songs in the playlist.  Or to put it another way, the paths in the playlist have to be relative to the location of the playlist.  So in practice this means playlists need to go in the root or MUSIC folder.  However, you could have a playlist in an artist folder that only has songs from album folders under that artist folder.  Or you you could have a playlist in an album folder that only has songs from that album.

However, as tapeworm said, you cannot put the playlist in a separate branch from the songs in the playlist.  If all the songs in the playlist are under the MUSIC folder, you can’t put the playlist in the PLAYLISTS folder.  The Fuze will expect the songs to be located somewhere under the PLAYLIST folder and it obviously won’t find them.

So basically, just for sanity, always put your playlists in the MUSIC folder, and make sure the paths in the playlists are relative to the MUSIC folder.  Then your playlists will always work.

Another useful tool to have around is MP3Tag for manipulating ID3 tags.

And… it can create .m3u playlists as well!  Make sure you check the

“Entries relative from work directory” option so it creates relative file paths.

Verrry Interesting! I did not know that.
