Podcasts: Fuze won't play the next podcast...

I apologise if this has been answered, but I haven’t had any success finding the post.

I’ve got an 8GB Fuze and have upgraded to the latest firmware. I have placed (drag and drop) my Podcast files into the Fuze. They appear in the order I dropped them inot hte Fuze, and each file can be played under the podcasts folder. However, once one podcast has finished playing, it won’t play the next and subsequent ones automatically. It just sits there at the end of the podcast and if I press the right direction key, which I would have thought, should at least move it to the next song, it brings up the “music menu”. I then have to go back into the “podcasts” folder, choose the next podcast and play. If I press the down direction, it takes me to the “episodes” part of the podcast folder and I then have to go left and scroll down to the next episode. Sheesh!

Please tell me what I’m doing wrong? How do I get it to play each podcast in a row, without me having to find each next episode?

Thanks in advance.

I don’t do podcasts with any regularity, but you may have to create a ‘playlist’ to get them to play sequentially one after the other without stopping in between.

How easy is this to do? I just want to drag and drop and play. None of my previous MP3 players have ever required my to do this before. How come I can’t even just press the right direction key for it to move onto the next podcast? Surely it should at least do that?

Thanks for your response. Greatly appreciated.

You dont need to do a playlist. It should play them Straight thru. I am adding about 75 new files to my fuze right now, once thats done I will switch SD cards so I have my podcasts and will let you know.

This is what I keep thinking. You’ve jogged my memory. I have audiobooks in the audiobooks folder and they all play one after the other. So, what’s so different about the podcast folder?

Ok Here is what I got. It will play straight thru the ones that are from the same source. So for instance, I have 15 from Indiefeed: alternative, it will play all of them. But then to go to PCMag, I have to back out to the podcast list, and choose it. It wont play every podcast like you expect. I think this is on purpose so you always know what you are playing. So you may need to make a playlist. Its not so hard to deal with tho.

Well. Between now and my last post I’ve been trying to search this forum and create playlists (.m3u). I’m having no success and I’m beginning to fear I have purchased a dog of a device. I thought I was buying a fantastic device and searched for weeks before making my purchasing desicion. Alas. If I had of realised that the Sansa Fuze was not a true drag and drop player, I would NEVER have bought it.

I’ve tried using either of the USB modes (MTP & MSC). I’ve tried using  MP3Tag to create playlists using Ocsirf’s method here: http://forums.sandisk.com/sansa/board/message?board.id=clip&message.id=807&query.id=174323#M807 I’ve made sure that the option to make the playlist relative is checked, I’ve used the name “Podcasts” for the Album. I’ve tried putting the .m3u file in the same directory as the podcasts, the directory immediately below. I’ve tried all this in different folders, Music, Audiobooks, Podcasts etc. The Sansa sees the .m3u file but when you choose the playlist it’s aways empty. If the files are in their own subdirectory, they always show up in the root folder (Music, podcast, Audiobook) and not in their subfolder.

I don’t wish to install WinAMP, nor do I wish to use Windows Media Player. I just want to be able to drag my podcasts onto the Fuze and have them play one after the other. I don’t care what order they play in, but I would have expected it would be the drag and drop order. Can I create a DOS batch fileto do what I need

This is driving me crazy. Please tell me where I’m going wrong. I’m sure there’s a very simple fix and explantion, but I’m not seeing it.

Sorry about being in b^tch mode, but I’m getting very frustrated here. Just as an aside, I use Ziepod (free version) from www.ziepod.com to download my podcasts.  Thanks anyway.

It is a true drag and drop player. Drag and Drop is a Transfer method not a playbak style.

I have an Idea since yesterday. Use the Go list, this is a built in customizable playlist. Instead of using the podcats folder Just add your podcasts as music (so like you would any other file) and then find the files on the Fuze,Go to the recently added list, hit the menu button(6 o’clock on the wheel) and scroll down to add to go list, and it will add, or when you go to the recently added list press and hold the center button and it will add to the go list. Then you go to playlists and choose go list. See if this helps. Once you listen to it then you can delete it from the player and the go list from the menu as well.

Personally, my view of a true drag and drop MP3 player is just as I described above. There should be no onus on the owner of the device to have to  start creating playlists. This should be completely unnecessary.  I think we’ll have to agree to disagree with that one.

Thanks very much for your help COnversionbox. It’s greatly appreciated. I’m going to try your Go List suggestion as well. It’s a good suggestion.

I have some good news though:

I have had some success in getting the Sansa to show and play all the files in order. I can’t tell you at this stage exactly how I did this, but I’ll try to replicate it and come back with full details. The files were placed in a subfolder in the Pocast folder. I believe I placed the .m3u file in the root of the Podcast folder, but I’d tried this before with no sucess, so I need to find out where I when wrong the first time and right the second time. I notice that the podcasts still show in the root of the Podcast folder, along with the subfolder (which never appeared before) but those files aren’t actually in the root folder. I’d prefer not to see them and ony see them when I go into the subfolder. If I play the files in the subfolder, they do play one after the other. The same files showing in the root folder do not play one after the other. It’s a good start.

Can someone please advise, what is actuallybeing changed by MP3tag, in terms of the Auto-numbering Wizard? Likewise with the Album field. Are these the ID3 tags?

I’m thinking that I can use Ziepod to change these fields automatically upon downloading each Podcast.I’m pretty sure Ziepod has a feature to allow changes to the ID3 tags. Or, perhaps I can do this using a DOS or Windows script. I’d use that script to generate an automatic Playlist as well. I usually get all my daily podcasts onto my MP3 Players by running a DOS batch file. It saves me time and dragging and dropping.

I dont disagree about the definition of drag and drop but I have learned that you have to think like the fuze does. And right now that means Drag and Drop is simply transfers not playback. It has been confirmed that programmers are working on folder based navigation, so you could just drag the folder and drop it and then it will play whats in that folder.

With regard to the rest of your questions I dont know. I havent used mp3tag to make a playlist yet, I will be soon. I have never even touched ziepod, or heard of it for that matter.

Ok. The solution is simpler than I thought. All you have to do is just use MP3tag to give track numbers to the MP3 files. I think it’s nice to also ensure that the files have the same Album name, but it’s not abolutely necessary. So, I have just adjusted Ocsirf’s guide to the following:

  1. Open MP3tag

  2. Browse to the Podcast directory on the Fuze where the files have been dropped.

  3. Select all the songs: (Ctrl-A) or Edit -> Select all files

  4. If the files aren’t showing in your prefered listening order, you can first arrange the files into the listening order you prefer by holding down the Alt key and dragging each file up or down.

  5. Open the auto-numbering wizard: (Ctrl-K) or Tools -> Auto-numbering wizard

  6. A little dialog will pop-up, click OK and it will number your track tags (I prefer to have the leading zero option checked)

  7. In the panel on the left, click in the album field

  8. Type in a name for the album, such as “My Mix” or whatever

  9. Click the save file button on the toolbar (very 1st button)

That’s it. No playlist .m3u file required. It’s a shame that MP3tag doesn’t have a command line to allow this to be automated.

THANK YOU! Thank you! I have had the same frustration for a long time! I listen while riding my bike but have to stop everytime it comes to the end of a podcast. It’s not alway easy to move the next when you are out in the bright sunlight and cant see the screen. I can’t tell you how happy this solution makes me. But, I’m going to install Windows 7 soon. Hope I can get mp3tag to work there.
