I have a cruzer micro with which came with U3 software. If I delete this software can I still have the ability to require a passcode to protect the device or is there amother software download besides U3 that I can use for securing the drive? Thanks.

No. And why would you want to delete U3? U3 runs on Windows 7 and 8, 32-bit and 64-bit in addition to XP.

Not really. There is SanDisk’s SecureAccess for securing files but not the whole drive. People who have tried using it to secure everything have found it to be very slow.
