I have never used an SSD, but bought a SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD thinking my grandkids could back up their photos from their iPhones. Is there a beginner’s manual anywhere to get me started?

No, there isn’t. What I learned is you have to use the Extreme with a computer and back up the iphone to it. It didn’t make sense to me, but I accepted I’d bought the wrong item. I was able to sell it to someone locally and am considering which USB drive I want to get for them.
It’s no different than using a hard drive or floppy disk, basically. Connect, transfer, disconnect.
