My Passport - USB 3 Not Working

Hi,

I’ve tried searching the forums for an answer to my specific problem to no avail.  I just built a new computer using this motherboard as base:

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4305#dl

The case has 2 USB3 ports on front.  When I plug in my portable USB3 passport drive, the following 3 things happen:

  • The wireless mouse that is plugged in the next USB slot starts behaving poorly or not working at all.

  • Computer detected the drive only once and driver install failed.

  • If I leave the drive plugged in when I restart, the computer will freeze during startup.  As soon as I remove the drive, it starts booting back up.

  • I don’t see the drive in my computer.

  • I don’t see the drive in disc management.

  • No exclamation points in device manager, however, I do see “disk drive” show up when I plug it in.  However, the mouse stops working shortly thereafter.

I can use a USB thumb drive in that same socket with no issues.  Only this hard drive seems to be causing problems.

I installed/uninstalled/reinstalled the USB3 drivers on the website linked above.

I tried the hard drive on a Windows 8 machine (mine is Windows 7).  Wasn’t recognized either.

I tried it on a Mac and it was recognized immediately.

Is the drive formatted for Windows? Is your power supply adequet? Make sure you aren’t using a cable longer than the original or connecting through a hub.
