My Passport Ultra not working out of the box - driver issue?

I’ve had a My Passport Ultra metal 2TB drive (model WDBEZW0020BSL) for a few years, but just tried to use it for the first time. I’m using a Windows 10 computer, in case that’s relevant. When I plugged in the drive, an empty File Explorer window opened with a box that says “Location is not available. D:\ is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect.”

The device manager listed the drive twice: under Disk drives as WD My Passport 2599 USB Device; and under Other devices as WD SES Device USB Device.

When I right clicked on the first, then selected Properties/General, the device status said the device is working properly; driver provider and version are Microsoft, 10.0.19041.789.

For the second, the status said: “The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28). There are no compatible drivers for this device. To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.” When I did that and had Windows search automatically for drivers, it said Windows can’t find drivers for the device and to check the manufacturer’s website. I found a WD driver listed in the optional updates, so installed that, then disconnected the drive and restarted the computer, thinking that would work.

This time, after plugging it in, the File Explorer box opened again, but with a slightly different message to the one above – it said “Location is not available. D:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

Also, the drive is now listed three times in the device manager: under Disk drives (same name, status, and driver provider/version as before), and also under Portable devices (simply named D:) and WD Drive Management devices (named WD SES Device), both new listings; it’s no longer listed under Other devices (this has disappeared).

The device status for all three listings now says the device is working properly. The driver details for the first listing remains the same (Microsoft, 10.0.19041.789); for the Portable devices listing, it is Microsoft, 10.0.19041.746; for the WD Drive Management devices, it is Western Digital, 1.2.0.0.

However, I can’t access the drive. It isn’t shown by name in File Explorer, and when I try to open the D:/ drive, it gives me the “Location is not available. D:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable” message.

Does anyone have a recommendation on how to get this to work? Thanks in advance.

Hi @Jordan13,

Please test the health of your drive using the Western Digital Drive utility:
