2TB My Passport Ultra Life?

Hello Everyone.

I purchased a 2TB My Passport Ultra in 2015. It no longer works in either my Dell XPS desktop nor my newer Dell laptop under Windows 10. It was working just a couple of months ago. I don’t see it under the device manager under “disk drives” nor under the Disk Manager. It never opens up or becomes recognizable under windows file explorer. I believe I checked the drivers and they are current. Although I wonder whether this doesn’t have something to do with a recent Windows 10 update.

In any case, presuming this drive is gone, what is a reasonable life to expect from a My Passport, My Passport Ultra, or Easystore portable HD? I use this for storage of archived pictures and backing up my desktop. I’m looking at buying another one, but I don’t want to make another investment if it’s not going to last. Is the life on the desktop external drives any better? I would guess maybe I’d be better off with an SSD drive (although they are still expensive)?

Wouldn’t you think that a USB 3.0+ capable computer and external HD should be able to continue to function through Windows updates … for longer? Or am I dealing with the mechanical parts in a HD are prone to fail sooner rather than later paradigm?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I am having the same problems and have not found a solution. Others have too but no direction from WD other than reach out to the WD Community.

Need to switch them off 90% else dont last long at all

P.s
If you know what your doing you could remove the drive from its case and connect to pc inside, depending on its format windows has a lot better test programs, or install matching os program in windows to see it, then test

My pasport pro wifi, plugged into pc and used windows scandisk to fix the curupt disk, didnt loose anything, nothing in the os could do anything
