My Book Studio is STILL "Preparing Backup"

I have a several-years-old My Book Studio. it’s recognized in Finder, everything looks good…but it has been “preparing backup” for nearly half an hour. I need it to stop preparing and start backing up.

Please be gentle with me: I am a technological ■■■■■. But I’m a technological ■■■■■ who would prefer not to have to buy a new external drive, if possible.
