When I switch on My Book, Backup and Retrieve on the top bar do not light up,
and the vertical computer display does not light up either.
How can I make it work properly

Are you using the WD Smartware software?
Is the drive showing under my computer?
Make sure that the drive is properly connected to the computer and to the wall power outlet.
